From the Las Vegas Journal Review – "Testing of the water done after the CDC reported the death to the health district on Jan. 6 found conclusively that the Legionella bacteria were present in the water system, a preliminary investigative report issued by the health district revealed. The incubation period for the disease is between 10 days and two weeks, Labus said."

A message from Luxor Hotel & Casino:

You may have read or heard media reports about Legionella at Luxor Hotel and Casino. Luxor wants to make sure that all of our guests, past, present and future, are aware of the facts.

The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) has posted a public notice that three former Luxor guests may have been exposed to Legionella bacteria. Luxor is working in full cooperation with the SNHD. Under the guidance and supervision of the Health District, Luxor has already completed remediation efforts of the affected areas of the hotel water system. In an abundance of caution, Luxor is voluntarily extending remediation efforts throughout the rest of the hotel.

Legionella is naturally occurring and is found in most water supplies. Legionella can cause a respiratory illness similar to pneumonia. Symptoms usually begin 2 to 14 days after exposure. Because the incubation period for the Legionella bacteria is 2 to 14 days, former guests who stayed at the hotel in 2011 and HAVE NOT become ill should not be at risk. To become infected, people must breathe mist or water vapor contaminated with the bacteria. Most healthy adults are successfully treated with antibiotics. People susceptible to infection due to a chronic illness, respiratory disease, an compromised immune system or if they are a smoker or elderly, they can be at higher risk to contract the illness. Legionella is NOT spread from person to person. A person diagnosed with Legionellosis is not a threat to family members or others who share office space or other areas with him or her. Legionella is a concern for all large buildings including hotels, hospitals, schools, and other structures with large common water systems. Luxor has an ongoing, comprehensive water management program in place, which includes regular testing for Legionella.
