(NL-Derek Burts aka "Cameron Reid" and gay films as "Derrick Chambers)
Yesterday, the UCLA Reproductive Health Interest Group (RHIG), Queers for Public Health, and Law Students for Reproductive Justice hosted performer/marketing guru Rob Romoni, director Chris Steele, AHF attorney Brian Chase, and HIV-positive former performer Derrick Burts at a “Condom Use in the Adult Film Industry” meeting. Steele, Romoni, and Burts all expressed their strong support of HIV testing and condom use in porn, with Burts going so far as to say that condoms should be “mandatory.” Burts, you’ll recall, claims he acquired HIV on a set where condoms were used. (This quote from the LATimes-Burts says he may have contracted the disease during a gay porn shoot in Florida. He said the performers used condoms during intercourse but not during oral sex.) Steele, an executive at Jet Set Men, admitted that changing industry practices isn’t their main objective, but that Jet Set is “doing what we’re doing and we hope we lead by example.”
1. “Queers for Public Health”? Is this a joke?
2. Derrick Burts claims he acquired HIV on a set where condoms were used and demands mandatory condoms. Doesn’t this support my point that the “condoms = safety” theory has literal holes in it? Ok he said there were no rubbers for oral…
3. Burts says he “may” have contracted “the disease” during a gay shoot… or “maybe not?”
4. He says condoms were not used during oral sex.
So he “may” have contracted “the disease” from oral.
This whole thing is nutty.
I strongly suggest Burts test somewhere else where they have different testing standards because different standards exist everywhere and there’s a chance subsequent tests will say he’s HIV-negative. Also I’d recommend he make sure he doesn’t tell them he’s positive just in case that has an effect on how they determine if they’re positive. If you’ve ever gone to school and you want to take an independant study class, several signatures are required but it is common knowlege that that authorities have a tendency automatically agree with the authorities before them.
