NL-Another fabulous documented article & statistical graphics by our friend Susana.
Porn in the Digital Age: Why Pay?… Four In Five People Download Illegally… Internet Piracy Is Killing Porn’s Profits… Troubles for Adult Industry Profits… How Big Is Porn?… Illegal Downloads Harm Brit Film Industry… Most pirates say they’d pay for legal downloads…
These are some headlines you may find on Internet news and blogs. Why does it matter? How does it affect YOU and the Adult Industry? Do you care about it? Then, go on reading.
If you think that piracy is fair, then go elsewhere to get what you deserve. That would be really fair, because you’ll get a load of crap. It’s easy to understand: Paying for a product or a service means paying for quality.
This article is an attempt to raise consciousness about working together to defeat piracy. I hope that June 1st will mean something to you after reading this paper.
METHODOLOGY
This is a documentary study. To maintain the accuracy in data, the sources were textually cited. Even though, if you find a mistake in the information, please let me know in order to do the appropriate corrections.
Let us start by the problem, because if we all are not aware of it, then won’t be easily solved.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
What does adult industry involve?
Let us focus on two items: A) Business, and B) Jobs.
A) BUSINESS
The statistics are truly staggering. According to compiled numbers from respected news and research organizations, such as 2006 & 2005 U.S. Pornography Industry Revenue Statistics, 2006 Top Adult Search Requests, 2006 Search Engine Request Trends, we have that:
• Every second $3,075.64 is being spent on pornography.
• Every second 28,258 internet users are viewing pornography.
• In that same second 372 internet users are typing adult search terms into search engines.
• Every 39 minutes a new pornographic video is being created in the U.S.
“It’s big business. The pornography industry has larger revenues than Microsoft, Google, Amazon, eBay, Yahoo, Apple and Netflix combined. 2006 Worldwide Pornography Revenues ballooned to $97.06 billion”. (ref. Ropelato, Jerry)
According to Free Speech Coalition, White Paper 2005, the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) estimates that “…of the 60,000 retail outlets in the United States that stock home video, 25,000 outlets carry adult titles. In the United States in 2002, adult video and DVD rentals and sales accounted for 29.1% of the gross income in stores that carry both mainstream and adult products, for a volume of over $3.95 billion. This figure includes transactions in retail outlets but does not include sales through mail order or over the Internet.
“Based on estimates provided by the hotel industry, at least half of all guests at hotels such as Marriott and Holiday Inn pay to view adult movies. These orders result in approximately $190 million a year in sales.
“Fantasy phone sex generates between $750 million and $1 billion in revenues each year with as much as 50 percent being retained by U.S. long distance carriers (from the CREW report).
“Satellite and cable operators, according to Kagan Research, earn just under $800 million a year from adult movie subscriptions.
“About the Internet, the 2002 US National Academies’ report on Youth, Pornography & the Internet noted that the number of paying subscribers to adult Websites is on the order of several million in the United States, and may be as high as 10 million. On average, each paid subscription generates $20 to $40 per month in revenue”. (ref. Free Speech Coalition, WHITE PAPER 2005)
Let us put it on a chart:
The data I expose, were published by Tom Bonnett on March 19, 2010 at Sky News Online. (ref. Bonnett, Tom)
Of 1,607 people questioned, nearly a third said they had downloaded a film while it was still showing in the cinema. Almost a quarter (24%) said they had streamed movies online. Of those that said they had downloaded files illegally, 35% said they had used torrent websites.
Peer-to-peer websites were more commonly used, with 78% saying they had used them. Over half of those polled – 52% – said they’d tried streaming illegal video and music content. The survey found men are more likely to download illegal files, with 85% saying they had, compared to 79% of women.
When asked, "What are your thoughts with regards to illegal downloading?", nearly half, 47%, said they did not think of it as crime, whilst 11% said they would never do it.
There is a lot more great info in this article, but too much to put up here, but you can go to Susuanna’s website to see it all. Susana’s Statistics
