Interview with Bill Margold!
Wednesday, July 01, 2009 by M. Dickinson

1) How long have you been in the industry? How did you get started? Have you had fun in the industry?

I have been involved in The Adult Entertainment Industry since the fall of 1971. I began as a writer and evolved in a multi-faceted participant ranging from actor (approx. 400 hardcore scenes in over 250 productions) to agent to activist as well as a scriptwriter and director plus creative coordinator and publicity manager for a number of companies and organizations. My response to the word "Fun" is "my whole career has been a vacation." I am currently considered to be the X-Rated Industry’s Historian, but since I performed as well as took notes, I prefer to be called "The Practorian." I have a monthly series in SWANK called "Those Were The Lays." And I write a weekly column (Cinema Seen) wherein I review mainstream films but also manage to tell my life story at the same time for THE LAXPRESS, an alternative publication based in Hollywood, California.

2) Are you concerned with the rights of the adult industry to make and produce movies/web clips?

I have never been a believer in "rights" but rather I consider being in the Adult Industry "a privilege"…and it must not be taken for granted and must be fought for 25 hours a day. I have never hidden behind The First Amendment or wrapped myself in The American Flag.

3) Could you talk about what it is actually like on a set, as far as having ID, signing model releases, having an AIM test, etc? Have you seen or heard of anyone in the legitimate adult industry knowingly using minors in films or the web?

I think that people who blather around the word "pornography" are as clueless as they are uncool. I am proud to be part of The Adult Entertainment Industry and I stress the word "adult." In fact I’d like to raise the age of entrance in X to 21 years old for all performers, thus eliminating even the slightest concept of "kiddie porn."

4) Do you ever get offended by shows like South Park or Family Guy? What do you think about shows/writing that offends people?

It takes an awful lot to offend me. My favorite show on TV is "The Simpsons."

5) What do you think about some of the stuff that pushes the limit in the adult industry, stuff like Max Hardcore, Kink.com, JM Productions?

The odds finally caught up with Max Hardcore and apparently with Rob Black and perhaps one day with the likes of JM Productions. They were and are mean-spirited tragedies waiting to happen as they defy the sensibilities of society and shatter the souls of those whom they subject to scenes that promote misery and degradation way beyond anything remotely associated with entertainment…or erotica. Back before the making of Explicit Adult Materials became legal in California (1988)…I unlocked quite a few zippers of the mind, but once we were Hal Freeman won his case…I figured that it was time to practice a little "common-sense-sorship."

6) Have you ever been asked to do a scene or something on film that you thought was crazy and wondered if it was offensive/legal? What was it? Did you do the scene or the act anyway?

I have never been involved in any production where a performer got hurt or was subjected to anything that she (or he) didn’t fully consent to.

7) Why do you think America has such a fascination with sex and with regulating sex?

America’s fascination with sex stems from it still thinking that it is "naughty." Many years ago, I said "If you cut a tit off you get an R-rating. If you kiss a tit you’ll get an X."

8) A lot of people in the industry have told me that most the people in the industry don’t care about protecting free speech, or really about anyone other than themselves and their money. Do you think this is true? Do you think a lot of the people that are new to the industry care or have any concern about free speech and protecting the right to make movies?

Most people in X babble a good game about Free Speech while hoping that all of their competitors go out of business. My stance is "there’s no dollar sign in the word cause." I believe that The Adult Entertainment Industry provides a masturbatory catharsis for the masses and to that extent I’ve never seen an adult production jump down from the shelf, run down the street and drag somebody home and force them to watch it. We provide a keyhole and the viewer willingly drops down to take a look, Remember…"In a society that is drug-infested, violence wracked and polluted by chemical greed…no one has ever died from an overdose of Pornography."

9) What is the craziest thing you have done/or scene you’ve been in on camera?

I am notorious from creating eccentric scenes such as working with a couple of cooked chickens in 1981’s "Intimate Lessons" or inventing "The Margold Shot" (consuming my own ejaculation off of a co-star) back in 1979. My favorite role is that of Harry Baulls in "The Disco Dolls in Hot Skin"…a 3-D Xer that has been playing the midnight circuit since 1978.

Beyond anything that I have ever created…my greatest image is that of the ladies raising the American flag which I conceptualized in 1991 for the
Adult Video Association (which became The Free Speech Coalition a few years later).

10) Have you been involved with trying to change people’s opinions about the industry?

I have no intention of resting on laurels as that would only result in getting thorns in my ass. I would like very much to continue to live up to one of my mottos: "There is no future if in the present we fail to pay homage to the past."

Thanks for the chance to join your "revolution."

  1. Larry Horse says:

I think I’m gonna be sick.

  2. max softcore says:

Pompous fucking prick. And the people who are dancing over the Rob Black verdict are no better…

  3. In both Max and Black’s cases, the things they were convicted of had nothing to do with the things for which they were and are generally condemned.

  4. Bill Margold is indefatigably a monstrosity of pomposity and please quote me on this.

  5. The President says:

The PAW stuff and self inmportance that he gets bashed for aside, he makes some good points and seems to echo what a number of other people in the business have to say about Max and Rob Black’s material. I don’t get it though, Larry Flynt said true freedom means defending the worst out there. At the time, he was the worst. Now it seems even Flynt isn’t defending the worst. I like how Margold says he has never been one to wrap himself in the American flag then he goes on to say what he was most proud of was the design for a promotion involving porn girls raising the American flag….

  6. Bill Margold calls the porn world:

“Children in the playpen of the damned”

I think he is right. There are a lot of people pretending and playing roles such as:

    Doctor-played by Miss Sharon Mitchell
    Navy SEAL-played by Van Damage
Business exec. performed by Shy Love
    Nurse-Tera Patrick
    Straight guy who likes girls-Christian

……. and so many more. These fuckers are acting like children. They lie and they take from everyone else. Do they feel good about themselves? Instead of taking, they should try and give. Then they might feel better about the way the live. Lots of bullshit. People not getting paid, drama, stupid meaningless award shows and just overall childish drama bullshit.

Your part of it Jeremy Steele. You need to be a better judge of character. Sofia should have gave you clues off the start that she was a drama queen bitch nazi. You’ve been in the biz long enough Jeremy that should own a home. Your’e going end up like Tedeschi soon. You would make a good Robin.

  7. MissBiatch2U says:

    Pompous
1 : excessively elevated or ornate
    2 : having or exhibiting self-importance :arrogant
    3 : Bill Margold

  8. “Do they feel good about themselves?”

I know some well known porn chicks that have told me in private that they do thing about suicide lots of times.

So many do not feel OK but have no will to change. That is why substance abuse is so high in porn.

  9. SHIT, it think not thing, fucking dislexia.

  10. I really don’t understand what free speech has to do with performers in porn. They say let the performers decide for themselves if they want to use condoms. We all know the production companies would make a blacklist of those that will only shoot condom shoots.

This isn’t about free speech to enjoy sex. This is about safe working conditions and the Free Speech Coalition needs to for once “SHUT THEIR FUCKING MOUTHS AND MIND THEIR OWN BIZ”!!

I just wonder how many of the Free Speech Coalition and the AIM owners and board members are part of the secret sex society of porn? All they are doing is protecting their right to take advantage of and fuck the young, fresh meat that get pulled in without a clue.

I agree with Bob. Change the age for performing or working in porn to 21. At least let these young kids learn a little about life before pulling them into a modern day Sodom and Gamorrah!!

  11. freepornstarpix says:

The legal age should be 21. Teenagers don’t realize that porn will follow then forever.
