I think people need to realize that as messed up as some strippers and porn stars are (female and male), they deserve respect and sympathy. Their type of employment is a very difficult one, made all the more difficult because workers are not treated well in the industry.
If you are someone who views them simply as people to use and cast aside, you are beneath contempt. It is the person who has not self-respect who is first to disrespect another (as moonkelly demonstrates).
Let’s look at the numbers.
In 2005, the cost to incarcerate a person in NY State was $46,700. I couldn’t find numbers for California.
Adjusting for 3 years’ inflation gets $51000.
If we suppose that Lucy Lee earned $50,000 per year (low #?) and paid $15,000 in taxes annually, then the true cost to the taxpayer of keeping her in prison is roughly the sum of $15k and $51k, equals $66k.
However the NY state number was stated as being for a prison “bed”, and so presumably excluded alcohol and drug abuse treatment. If we assume that she meets with a treatment person for 4 hours per week, and that at person is paid $20 per hour, that’s an additional $4000 per year.
The total bill to the taxpayer is $70,000.
And what does that achieve?
1. It sends a command “do not commit crimes in future”, which she can ignore if she wishes.
2. It provides a break from a social scene that may have encouraged use of booze and drugs, but drugs are illicitly available in prison anyway. Tobacco certainly is, and that will keep alive any tendency toward addiction if she uses it.
3. It puts her at risk of getting STDs.
Let’s also ask, what else would that $70k buy?
If $70k is the taxpayers’ investment in Lucy Lee, what will SOCIETY get in return?
I’d argue that taxpayers will receive little or nothing, because they aren’t truly investing in her. They’re mainly trying to punish her.
As psychologists have been trying to tell us for 50 years, punishment does not change behavior.
However if Lucy Lee were up to the challenge, $70k would buy 4 years of college, room and board included. Even if she went and failed every course, she would be a better person coming out of college than coming out of any prison.

Personally, I think the jails are inhumane, a form of sadistic, cruel and unusual punishment and should be eliminated all together in favor of something less medieval and productive. Incarceration isn’t about rehabilitation. It’s a symptom of the privitization of this once great nation. It’s all about dollars and no sense. The U.S. has more of it’s citizens held in incarceration than any country in the world. Right now jails in L.A. are letting out scores of people due to overcrowdling. If we step back and look at it all objectively, we’ll see that crime starts at the top, not the bottom. For example, the biggest industry by far is the exportation (and occasional importation to get it going) of war. The biggest criminals are not the burglars and shoplifters but the Enrons, the gov’t which charges 170% tax on traffic overpriced traffic tickets, and the legal criminals, like the Home Depots who charge you gold for wood, Office Depots who make you spend something for nothing, the Whole Foods markets which make health almost as costly as sickness, etc. Of course I’m just a liberal nut so noone should listen to me.

I think it’s a universal phenomenon can that be seen in any country, that the more crime that’s committed at the top of society, the more the media and/or politicians and/or government tell us to watch out for petty criminals, and the more that petty criminals are incarcerated. “Don’t look at us, it’s them”.
Meanwhile in the US the rich are making a killing off the incarceration business, as are their loyal servants as might be found in the police and prison guard unions etc.
An additional concern about Lucy’s situation is that if she has 2 felony convictions, a third might put her away for life under Three Strikes. It’s in the interest of the people who run the system to find any way to make that 3rd conviction, e.g. by misconstruing events.
Perhaps someone could elaborate on how that 3 strikes works but my guess is that if an official pardon were possible it would prevent such an outcome.

Lucy has past felony (not misdemeanor, but felony) convictions for both assault and drugs (narcotics, if I’m not mistaken). She was on parole (not probation, but parole), and violated that by trashing a liquor store at 2 a.m. because they wouldn’t sell her alcohol.
