Body Magic and Doing It by Mark Corby and Sven Conrad aim at the sophisticated upper-income crowd who want a glossy portrayal of life Playboy style but with explicit sex. Their artistic successor is the producer and director of Night Dreams Andrew Blake.

In 1982's Body Magic, a sexually bored photographer falls for a model who demands love. Mark (Rich Ardonne) teaches his craft to Laura (Kathleen Kristal). The film opens with 15 minutes of erotic, high-style still picture shooting with seductive ladies packaged in with eye-catching cinematography and editing. The dialogue is a voice-over commenting on Mark: "Photography took all his energy but he loves it. It was the best electric train a boy could have, but now without love, and after many sexual encounters [not shown], Mark remembers when he worked for fun."

But at this point in his career he was doing it for money. Among the explicit sex scenes that Mark is presumably shooting with a 35mm camera is a country music party and an "orgy" in a barn; and even further-out group sex at a fraternity party to which he has been invited - although Mark is long past his college days. Mark never participates in any of the sex scenes. He thinks he's falling in love with Laura [his assistant], but she tells him that she would be "too inhibited." In the words of the commentator, "They talked, became friends, they toasted life and each other - and for the first time in his life he was turned down."

They finally come together in bed.

While there is much explicit sex throughout the film, even in the final scene where Laura and Mark are making ecstatic love, the camera never focuses on their genitals. (Bob Rimmer)

Doing It appeared in 1983 and is equally sophisticated. "Eric Edwards and Drea are financially secure and live near San Francisco in a beautiful home with an outdoor swimming pool and separate jacuzzi that will make your mouth water.

"For the first 15 minutes you meet them - together with their friends and servants - during an afternoon and evening. An anything-goes orgy ensues, which includes underwater sex, two guys making it with one gal on the edge of the pool... Then the day comes to an abrupt end, and you hear Eric and Drea in their living room talking about how nice it was. But Drea notices that Eric is "getting one of those I-want-something-else looks in his eyes again." Bang, you see a masked man on a motorcycle chasing Drea over the manicured grounds. When she collapses and you think she's about to be raped by a knife-carrying maniac, it turns out to be Eric, laughing. "What the hell do you want," she demands. "Kicks," he replies, and immediately they are off on a camping trip on his motorcycle, taking a mad tour on two-lane roads north of San Francisco." (Guide, p.80)

Doing It was one of Eric Edwards' favorite films.
