"Serious history of the dirty-movie business." Booklist

After the 1994 Northridge earthquake destroyed her home and job, leaving 40-year old Kate McVey homeless, she looked around for a way to make money fast.

By entering porn and living a fantasy she'd had for years, plain Kate became Stormy Gale.

Over the last three years, she's done 30 videos.

When not performing, Kate handles the books for the porn talent agency Pretty Girl International. She and her boyfriend live with owner Reb Sawitz.

Until beginning the relationship in early 1997, Kate had been chaste since her divorce five years ago - except for the times she had sex on camera.

"Those are my values. Real sex is more than just f---ing. Real sex is worth waiting for the right person. It's worth getting to know the person before having sex. I'm not into sex for fun anymore. It's too dangerous and not emotionally fulfilling. Many people don't realize that what they see on camera is not real sex."

As for McVey's porn debut: "I was nervous, but not overly worried about it because of my lifestyle when I was younger.

"It turned out to be surprisingly easy and I turned out to be surprisingly good at it. I did not intend to make it a career choice. It's only by accident that I turned out successful. And now that I see I can be successful, I play it for all its worth."

Stormy Gale has a fan club which receives ten letters a week. She's appeared in numerous over-40 sex magazines.

Growing up in Texas, McVey graduated high school a virgin. Moving on from her small town to college in the early '70s, she made up for lost time. "It's a wonder that I didn't come down with anything deadly."

Kate dropped out of college after two years and married at age 28. It lasted ten years.

"Sex on camera is work. It's like any other job. It helps to be athletic because they put you into unnatural positions and horrible costumes and horrible shoes and they expect you to make it look like you're having a good time.

"It's hard when they say 'Freeze for stills.' You've got to instantly freeze, and then maintain your energy level and go right back to it.

"It's not what the public thinks. I've seen a lot of girls come into the industry thinking it's easy. They last two scenes and say, 'Whoa, I didn't know this was work'.

"There a high turnover in this industry. It takes a rare individual who's able to handle not only the performance but the whole environment.

"It's done me good. It's helped rebuild my self-esteem. And the money's nice. You don't have to be 18 and blonde and have tits out to here to be successful in the sex industry. You can be 43 and with red hair and natural boobs and still sell real sex.

"I went into it for myself. I wasn't supporting a boyfriend or being manipulated by some guy who wants to get his jollies off. I see that a lot. I see men manipulate their women into doing sex work. The women don't care for it but they'll do it for their man.

"What people want from porn is not just a blonde bimbo they can fantasize about. They want to put themselves into the picture with real people, into a situation that could happen to them. The blonde bimbo is unapproachable to the normal person, whereas I look like the average girl next door.

"My fan mail runs the gamut from young men - who might be 18 - fantasizing about older women they've had experiences with to older men who say that younger women are prettier to look at but older women are more skilled in bed.

"I've received hysterical letters about incidents with step-moms and aunts... Part of the attraction [to watching older women have sex] is the tabooness of it...

"I don't understand why men get off on these things. It totally escapes me. I think it's funny but they take it very seriously."

Stormy's favorite production was Grumpy Old Women for director Rick Neilsen.

With several of her over-40 peers including Kitty Fox and Diana Richards, Stormy played an older woman in an old folks home subjected to sexual therapy from Dave Hardman and Rick Masters.

"We got into our makeup and clowned around. We're all good at improv. We've never laughed so hard..."

Stormy's favorite stud is her young friend Dave Hardman but says that there's no one she's come across that bothers her. She's yet to do Max Hardcore and doesn't plan to.

"If the government wanted to shut down the porn industry, they should just audit everybody, instead of taking a moral viewpoint. This industry runs on cash that's not reported to the IRS. The performers are usually paid in cash.

"The people who make the money in this business - the distributors - are those who are not directly involved in production. And it's that way generally in the arts. There are the artists and there are those who make the money."

In her three years in the industry, Kate's found one woman who was not sexually abused as a child or raped. "Every single other one had.

"I'm both a molestation victim and a rape victim. In the general public, the ratio is - three out of every five women by the time they're 20, have either been raped or molested. In the sex industry, it's nearly universal.

"One of the reasons that women can do this is - if you've been molested or raped, you've learned to be detached during sex."

Based on this reasoning, performers like Chasey Lain must've endured innumerable rapes and molestations. You can't get a much more detached sex actress than Lain, unless it's Savannah whose been pretty dead of late.

"Women who've been raped or molested learn to get through sex without feeling it, and thus are not hurt by it. It's a survival technique we learn as children. When you can't change what's happening to you, you have to develop some technique to deal with it.

"There are women who are true exhibitionists and are fine with being on camera, but I think there's a link [between abuse and performing sex]. I've seen many girls come to terms with having been raped or molested, and once they have this peace, they can no longer work in the industry.

"I've talked to a lot of men in the industry also, men who are able to talk about openly, and found that they've gone through a similar ordeal.

"Female performers are not sex crazed. It's just a job to them. They have husbands and children to support. The viewing male does not realize how much he gets laughed at by the women. I know that there are a lot of men [who use porn] who really believe that these women are dying to f--- them."

McVey laughs. "Guys don't want to believe that we're just materialistic bitches looking for a way to make a buck. They want to believe that we do it because we can't get enough sex. That's the image the industry wants to sell and so female performers have to convey that to the magazines that cover the industry. But it's just an image. It's not reality.

"I've had feminists tell me that I'm being exploited. I'm not. Men are being exploited. They're getting charged outrageous prices for safe sex. It's a scam and what's really funny is that men don't know that. They really believe that Stormy Gail is dying to f--- them.

"As a performer you get into a double bind. To be successful you have to sell an image. But it'd also be nice to be able to tell the truth. The majority of women [in porn] are there for the money. The majority of men are there for the women. And if they find out that you're single, they really want you to go out with them. So many of the male performers are needy. They have this element of desperation which is true of the single population in general..."

Stormy Gail starred in Loretta Sterling's Aged to Perfection. "With Medicare vanishing and social security diminishing," writes AFW, "the elderly have had to turn to other means to make a living, including odd jobs like sucking dick and taking it up the ass for a few bucks… Stormy Gail takes it anal as she eats out her chubby fifty-plus girlfriend Jenny Joyce."

Porn boom

Adult video accounts for 25% of Hollywood's rental revenue

By JEFF CRAIG -- Express Writer

HOLLYWOOD -- Let's have a look at this week's top 10 video rentals.

There's Face/Off, naturally. My Best Friend's Wedding, Contact, Men in Black, Conspiracy Theory and - what's this ... Bad Girls 9? More Dirty Debutantes 75?

It's true, so forgive us, Father: when it comes to pornography, we are sinning like never before.

According to the publisher of the "adult" trade publication Adult Video News - a sort of Hollywood Reporter or Variety for the innocence-challenged crowd - porn tapes now account for a full quarter of Hollywood's $16.2-billion annual rental revenues.

"And that's just rentals," says Paul Fishbein. "If mail and CD-ROM sales were taken into account, billions more would be added to the annual sales statistics for adult videos and other adult entertainment products."

...It has its apologists, such as California author Luke F-rd, who says, "To understand that porn springs from male desire more than male desire springs from porn, would save thousands of activists from wasting their time."
