At the AVN Expo in July of 1999, I hung out with the European Sin City contract girls Katja Kean (from Denmark) and Linda Thoren (from Sweden). Katja worked in the hotel business for years until appearing in porno videos for Private in 1997, beginning with Anal Orchid followed by That's Life. She signed with Sin City in April and has done her first scene (director Michael Raven, sex partner Chris Cannon). "I just did a big budget production for a famous Danish director Lars Boncreer called Constance." Luke: "How did you get into this industry?" Katja: "I was watching a movie with my husband...and at the end of the movie was an invitation to send in your picture if you wanted to do movies... After five years, I was tired of the hotel business. In that business also, people go in and out very fast. "I met Allison Roberts through a Danish journalist... At the AVN office... I did a movie for Wicked KKS - Katja Kean Sports... Then Allison took over as my agent in February..." Luke: "How does your husband feel about your work?" Katja: "He's very open minded. He has no problem. He does not do scenes. He's in insurance. "I prefer to work in the States. It's more like a job. In Europe it's 'what else are you doing?' [Extra-curricular sex.] You're not respected like here. And the people I work with here are more professional, with more longterm goals..." We're standing with Sin City PR man Leif Rock. Luke: "Has Leif Rock been professional or is he always hitting on you?" Katja: "I like him a lot more in person than on the telephone..." Luke: "Was he trying to get phone sex from you?" Katja: "No, very professional. Very dry." Leif: "I just had to bug her a lot to get stuff..." Katja: "Since I've heard of you [Luke], I'm going to tell you that everybody has been so nice..." Katja told the 1/27/00 GeneRoss.com: "The difference between Europe and the states as far as I see it, is that it's a business over here. It's much more accepted as a full-time job. In Europe, if you have a job like this, people think it's a hobby, that you must have something else to do. Especially where I come from, Denmark, it's even more like that because they only have low budget. The worst stuff you can do is in Denmark. But it's getting better. As they're getting more experience, they're producing better and better movies. I also work with a Danish company which was a mainstream company that went into doing adult movies, now. They tried to turn it around where it's more acceptable to people." G. Ross: "What is the current attitude in Denmark to adult films?" Kean: "I think it's a big taboo. You have a huge market, of course, but nobody ever really talks about it. It's always the old turn that it's the older guys who watch them; couples don't, women don't. That's the way people say it is, but that's not true. Forinstance the movies I did with this Danish company, tried to turn it around with high budget film and sex so that it was easier for the people to grasp and not just packaged with big boobies on the cover. It was nicely done with style and it opened up a new market with more variety." On RAME, Watcher reviews Michael Ninn's movie Ritual: "In the Liquid Latex scene the "ritualistic" setting resembles the medical scene, and the action takes place very slowly and deliberately as Katja Kean is led to the brightly lit table with the Fresnel lens strategically placed in front of the camera to magnify her nether regions. She is first shaved and then the liquid latex is poured and applied all over her body after which Vicca, equipped with a strap-on dildo, has her way with her. The music in this scenario (which actually starts with masturbation shots of Dee and Keri Windsor) is perfect for this kind of action: some extremely low bass, smooth Enigma-ish synth and Vicca's voice speaking to the viewer. "The concept works for me very well, even if this music is used in the end of the movie in a more ironic way in the last shots of the "destroyed" Vicca. Katja Kean looks extremely pretty in this movie (not that there is anything to complain about any of the other women - Vicca, Nikita, Dee, Keri Windsor, Jenny MacArthur, Danielle Rogers,...). She looks stunning the first time she steps out of the mist in the liquid latex scene, and in her latter scene on the green couch. "One thing I like in Ninn's work is that he puts in shots of women walking around in the kind of clothing that shows them off. Another is the closeups of faces, whether in sex scenes or not. The aspect I like least would be the sometimes gratuituous touches added in post-production. For instance, sometimes he seems to put in rotating women or other extraneous bits in the picture just because he can. However, there is less of that in Ritual than in some of his other movies."
