Maya Hills Interview
I call the 18-year old Saturday night, December 24, 2005.
She's at her mom's house in Florida. "I'm sitting here playing with my rabbit. I have four rabbits but they live with my mother. I'm an animal lover.
"I'm not moving to LA. I'm moving to the Palm Beach area so I can be closer to Tyler Young, my agent.
"I'm honored that you wanted to do an interview with me. So what would you like to know?"
Luke: "When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?"
Maya: "I had so many different things, a doctor, chef, teacher... At 17, I started going to college and studied business administration and wanted to become a mortgage broker. That lasted for six months. Then I got into the Adult industry. I started doing promotional work for some small companies in the Miami area. They offered me great money. So I did my first boy-girl shoot (Oct 21 for Icey Porn) and got paid $1,000 for a 45-minute scene.
"I met Tyler through answering an ad on CraigsList.com. I wrote her an email and sent her some pictures. Immediately she called me back and said, 'I'd like to meet with you.' We met on Oct 28. She became my manager. She started sending out my pictures. We were in LA on Nov 21 (shot first scene for Acid Rain)."
Maya's done over 20 scenes and appears on more than six boxcovers. "Everybody I've worked with has been so kind to me. I haven't had a bad experience. But I shouldn't say that or I'll jinx myself.
"Tyler picks out great companies for me to work with and finds out everything for me before I step on set. Photographers say I'm easy to work with."
Luke: "That's what Holly said."
Maya: "I follow directions.
"I turned 18 on August 21. I was born in West Siberia, Russia. I'm half Russian, half Eskimo. I came to the United States when I was seven (1995). I moved here with my family. Then my parents divorced and my dad moved back.
"At age 15, I moved back to Russia for a year. My mom stayed here with my brother.
"I saved my money and moved to Barcelona for four months. Then I got my visa to live in Sydney, Australia (for eight months). I went to a private Christian school - Pitt-Waterhouse. I worked in Manly.
"In September 2004, I moved back to live with my mom in Florida.
"I was away from my family a lot. That's why I matured quicker than the rest of my peers.
"I never thought I'd go into the Adult industry. I'd given thoughts to stripping because of the money.
"I wanted to get into modeling but everyone told me I was too short. I'm 5'7".
"Tyler showed me such a positive vibe on [porn]. I don't know what I'd do without them.
"I'm designing two clothing companies -- one for my website and one personal. I've got so many things going on. It's hard to keep a relationship when you're so busy. It has nothing to do with what I'm doing. When I wasn't in porn, I was in a relationship, but we broke it off because jealousy got the best of him."
Luke: "Do you think you could be monogamous?"
Maya: "Definitely."
Luke: "What type of men do you find attractive?"
Maya: "They have to be funny and sweet. Money, I can make my own. Age, I've met guys who are 20 years older and they act like they are twelve. He has to be nice and laid-back and love kids and animals and not be stuck up or cocky.
"In my family, we never looked at skin color or culture or religious background. If I marry a black Jewish guy tomorrow, my mom won't care.
"My mom knows about my work [in porn]. We don't really talk about it in the open. We just kinda joke about it. My father doesn't really know because I don't talk to him. My mother is the only family I have in the United States. My brother lives in Russia. He kinda has an idea but we don't talk so there's never a question."
Luke: "Have you lost any friends over your work in porn?"
Maya: "Not too many friends know about this. I lost touch with so many of them because of my work schedule. They're in a different space and so am I."
Luke: "Do you get along better with guys or girls?"
Maya: "Guys.
"Do you want gossip? I don't really have anything. I'm new to the business. I've seen nothing bad in this business. Tyler does have some girls who've been abused in the business, but they're with her now, and she's getting them great bookings."
Luke: "How have you changed [from your time in porn]?"
Maya: "I've matured. The more money I make, the less I spend. I'm trying to get into the stock market. I've noticed so many girls and guys are making thousands of dollars and they have nothing to show for it."

I call her Monday morning (Feb 13, 2006). She's in Florida.
About a month ago in Los Angeles, Maya had to be hospitalized for exhaustion. She'd been shooting scenes every day and was worn out. She hadn't been eating and collapsed on a set.
She returns to Los Angeles Feb 20, and then goes to Hawaii.
I ask about her collapse. "It was stress," she says. "I had bad muscle spasms in my leg. I needed protein.
"I cut my work schedule in half.
"I had like a mini-nervous breakdown. That's what I would call it. Everybody got so worried about me. My phone wouldn't stop ringing. It was so sweet. It's good to know that people care.
"I'm still new to the industry. I got carried away. I thought I could handle it all. Then it got too overwhelming.
"Tylers Talent has two new beautiful girls coming to LA with us -- Ivy Lynn and Kylie Hayes. I've been prepping them.
"I'm shooting Girls Playing for Playboy Productions in San Diego (Feb 27, 28). I'll be hosting it and I'll have the boxcover.
"I'm only working for eight days. I have a booking a day. A lot of people want me for magazine work.
"I'm shooting a girl-girl scene tonight for my website (MayaHills.com) and a boy-girl POV.
"I was in Cabo San Lucas from Feb 1-5. It was so much fun. I shot for Barely Legal. It was my first time in Mexico. The guy I worked with, Talon, was such a sweet guy. Me and him were talking outside of work."
Luke: "How did you like the AVN show?"
Maya: "I wish I wasn't so tired. I signed 1,200 calendars. When I was at the awards show, I was falling asleep. I enjoyed the convention more than the award show, where you're sitting there, sitting there, sitting there... I was amazed by how many people at the convention wanted my picture and autograph."

Maya calls me back Friday afternoon and gets right to the point. "I just called to tell you that I do not have a new agent. I have not done any scenes since last month, the last time I was out. I'm no longer in the Adult world, or modeling or acting. I'm pursuing a college education. I'm back to becoming a mortgage broker. And that's all."
Luke: "Congratulations."
Maya: "I'm calling to let you know that. Take me off your list or whatever. I'm not in that world anymore. OK?"
She's eager to be off the phone but I want to know more.
Luke: "Someone was speaking in your name. Saying they were your new agent."
Maya: "A lot of people say stuff that isn't true."
Luke: "So that was completely false? The person who was speaking in your name and saying you were coming back?"
Maya: "I'm just not going to comment. There was a possibility that I was going to do shoots. I just realized it's not the agents. It's not anything else. It's not the money. It's just not worth it.
"Right now I'm involved with a man. We're living together. I'm very happy. We're getting along great. I'm very happy that I left."
Luke: "That's awesome."
Maya: "I just wanted to let you know that. OK?"
She's eager to be gone. Why would she want to talk to porn people any longer?
Luke: "Good luck."
Maya: "Thank you. Bye, bye."
We were once all giggly and excited to chat. But now she's older and wiser. She's a completely different woman from the one I first spoke to in late December 2005. Then she had moved to be within a couple of miles from her beloved agent and big sister Tyler Young.
Maya Hills was as excited and loveable as any 18-year old girl could be when she entered porn five months ago. She was a girl that made many jaded pornographers such as Holly Randall believe that their work was good and honorable not to mention fun and exciting.
Holly looked at Maya as a girl who had her act together and was buying a house and setting up clothing companies with her earnings from porn. That porn had empowered Maya to have a great life like Holly and Suze and Humphry have, that Malibu ranch and new cars and horses and fabulous parties and generous gifts to needy folk such as myself.
Maya was all over boxcovers and the front page of suze.net.
I loved to talk to Maya. She made you believe that porn was not just a meatgrinder. That a woman with intelligence and grace could come through it unscathed.
Then as 2006 developed, I heard about bad things hitting Maya. There was the exhaustion from working every day, she got told by a shooter or two to lose weight, that was devastating to her self-esteem, she began fasting until she passed out on a set and had to be hospitalized. She had a nervous breakdown.
Maya's last trip to Los Angeles was horrible. It was filled with tension and dissent among the Tyler girls. Several of them got diagnosed with STDs. Maya learned she had gonorrhea. She had to cancel thousands of dollars of work. She was stuck thousands of miles from home with nothing to do.
But out of all the drama, Maya found love. Now she has a man and she wants to spend the rest of her life with him alone. She no longer welcomes the shallow adoration of dozens of photographers and thousands of fans when she has a taste of real love.
Maya's gone from porn. I wonder how many friends will she decide to keep from the industry? I bet zero. I bet she believes now that none of them were her true friends.
I didn't get to ask her but I'm sure she regrets her time in porn. I doubt it's anything she's proud of. But you won't to get to hear the perspectives of girls like her, the 99% who come in and out of the industry in a short time. They don't want to talk about their time in porn because in retrospect they find it shameful. When people are proud of what they do, they like to talk about it. Almost everyone wants the world to know about the good things they do (and most porners think they're work is good) and almost nobody wants to publicly reveal their shame.
Friday, 6:45 p.m. Maya Hills leaves this message: "I was just in contact with a friend of mine. I don't think you know her. Marina. I really would appreciate that you just do not comment on me period. This is just gossip. I am out of this world. I do not want to ruin her reputation. She's a very good friend of mine. She was trying to help me to get bookings. I thought I wanted to go back into the adult world. But I did not want to name any names because I don't believe in that and I want nothing to do with that. I really would appreciate for you not to trash anybody. I would appreciate if you would rewrite it. Yes, she did once represent me but the bookings were all cancelled.
"Honestly, why do you need to write about me? There are so many big stars out there. I'm nothing. I would really prefer you to never speak my name again."

Luke: "What about Maya Hills?"
Tyler Young from TylersTalent.com: "Before her last trip to California, she was telling me she was really unhappy and was thinking about getting out of the business and go back to school. I was like, 'Hey, then do it. I'll support you 100% on whatever it is you want to do.'
"She asked me to email her contract to her lawyer. I had it on my old computer and my scanner wasn't working. She asked if she could just pick it up. I said, 'I'll let you out of it.'
"I was really close with Maya. She moved a mile and a half away from me. We were together every day, whether it was to get coffee or to get our nails done, go to the gym, working, etc.
"She said, 'Thank you very much. I just want you to know that I am not with another agent. If I decide to get back into this, I'll do it on my own.'
"Then another friend forwarded an email saying that if you want to book Maya Hills, go to this website, where she was featured. It was the email address Maya had sent to me saying it was her lawyer.
"Of course I'm upset. I did love Maya. I cared about her. I did miss her."

Cindi Loftus Interviews Holly Randall
C-What is the hardest thing you ever had to tell anybody, besides turning them down. You must of had to tell people things that you didn’t want to say.
H-I’ve definitely had to tell this one girl that, we shot her once and then we shot her again a month and a half later and she had gained like 10-15 pounds and she was a small girl. It really showed. It definitely showed in her stomach. So as a woman I understand weight issues, I’ve been battling my weight my whole life. But I don’t make a living in front of the camera. I can get as fat as I want and I’ll still have a job. I told her in the nicest way that I could, "You’ve gained a little bit of weight. I want to shoot you again, and I want you to be in the best shape possible cause I want to get the best shoot on you." I gave her some pointers like spinning class, running and cut some carbs, watch the sugar, no sodas. I told her she was a beautiful girl and she had a beautiful face. You can always work on your body, that is something you can change and control.
C-So she didn’t get pissed?
H-No she was fine, but she took it really to heart. She was only eighteen and after that she refused to eat.
C-You, Holly Randall, are the cause of the poor girls anorexia!
H-I know, I felt terrible. Because then she ended up collapsing and having to go to the emergency room. I thought it was all my fault, but then I talked to her and she said a couple other photographers had told her the same thing. And I don’t know how they put it. But I tried to feed her.
