9am. Penthouse talent call opens at the Holiday Inn in Woodland Hills. Mark Spiegler has eight girls lined up at the door when it opens. Several of the Penthouse owners are waiting, including its head Marc Bell.
Marc is the definition of a hands-on owner, shuttling the girls in-and-out of the room to disrobe for his selection committee. Marc and his men (Don McDonald, Russell Frye) are dressed in suits and ties.

I ask various girls why they're doing porn. Most say the money. Most say they have not been taken advantage of.
Dominica Leoni is from the Czech Republic. She was born in 1980 and has been in porn for six years. She says she's done over a thousand movies.
Luke: "You've been busy."
Dominica: "I used to be busy. Not anymore.

9:30am. Rob talks loudly on his cell phone to Marty Romano. "It's been a bad bad year," he says. "Bad divorce."
Bengladesh porn girl Jazmin entered porn six months ago. "I think I'm the only one [from Bangladesh in porn]."
She's done about 60 movies. "I've always wanted to be famous for something. I tried to sing but I suck at it. I tried to dance. I was kinda good. I did belly dancing professionally. I wanted to do something more. I was very shy and not thinking good about myself. One of my friends said I would be good at porn if I tried. I was freaked out the first time. Then I thought why not. I want to go with the flow. I just did my thing. I started doing nude modeling with High Society magazine. Then I started dancing for a couple of months. I got bored with it. I heard about Mark Spiegler from one of my friends. That he was an agent. I called him. The next thing I knew I was in porn.
"Porn taught me to do anal. That's why I am so amazed by it. It just looked so hard before, but when I got into the porn industry, it looked so easy.
"I don't like the way people degrade porn girls."
Kinzie Kenner has been in porn for almost two years. "I've done about 40 boy-girl videos. I took a break from boy-girl videos for about a year. I wanted to focus on other things. I started a web site."
I kid her about porn girls' fancy name spellings. "We create our own language, don't we?
"I teach dance professionally. Not exotic dancing. But jazz, tap, hip hop, salsa, modern, things like that."
She stands 5'6 and measures 34A-24-34. No tattoos and no plastic surgery.
Luke: "Do you dance in [strip] clubs?"
Kinzie: "No. I do go-go dancing and professional dancing. I've been doing that my whole life."
Luke: "What's go-go dancing?"
Kinzie: "It's at a nightclub but not a topless club. You dance in a cage.
"Dance was my life. I did it for a living. I practiced three hours a day. I still love it. I want to open a performing arts center."
Luke: "I've read all these horror stories about dancers and the injuries they suffer."
Kinzie: "My back (scolios aka crooked spine) is bad and my knees are bad. If you are careful, you can gauge what your limits are and not hurt yourself."
Jayna Oso wears Indian boots with four-inch heels and a white top. She's happy and chatty. She's been in porn for three years, but only a year seriously. She's done about 100 movies.
She stands 5'3" and measures 34A-24-35. When I ask her if she got breast implants, she laughs. "I love having small boobs."
The girls laugh at me.
"I'm very shy," I explain. "I've never done this before. I'm not used to talking to girls."
Jayna: "Is that why your hand is in your pocket?"
Jayna says she "has the most amazing sex all the time and I'm thankful to porn for that. I guess it requires a lot of practice. You become more comfortable with anal. It's amazing how much your ass can stretch out. My first double anal, it slipped right in. I said, I don't do double anal and they said, well, it's in there. OK. I did it a couple of times."
I talk to a latin girl who's been in the industry seven months. She's done 20 movies. From Orange county, she started in porn by nude modeling for web sites.
I chat with Destiny St. Claire who sits with blonde Maxine Moore. Destiny was on 60 Minutes for a couple of seconds (on its porn segment) last year, getting a hug from Rob Spallone. That's how her family found out she was in porn. "My grandpa saw me."
She's been in porn three years.
Stacy Valentine and Shelby Myne from ExoticStarModels arrive around 10am with eight hot girls.
Syvette Wimberly comes from Houston. A former high school cheerleader, she's run three marathons. She's been in porn and Los Angeles for two weeks.
Randi Wright looks different. She has hair extensions and black and blonde colors. She has stitches above one eye.
Stevie has been practicing helicopter repelling for mountain music. She's a certified EMT (Emergency Medical Technician). She hasn't been around porn in about a year.
Katrena Starr (redhead) says she's done real movies but she prefers porn. She's done one porn movie. She stands 6' and measures 34C-27-36. "I have a little temper but I try to be nice all the time."
Desire Moore sits with Jim South Jr, who arrives with some girls around 11am. She's blonde and wears a yellow top. In porn for a year, she's done about 65 movies.
Desire grew up in Mississippi. She worked at an insurance company before moving to Los Angeles with her husband, a musician. While he struggled to find work, Desire went to work as a dancer. One day when she was shopping for stripper clothes, she met porn agent Arthur MacArthur, who got her into XXX.
I don't know any other porn stars from Mississippi.
Many of the girls get into porn by posting their pictures on places like adultjobs.com and 1modelplace.com. Agents pick them out and bring them in.
I meet Tim from Naughty Models. He's got a 23yo girl who only does girl-girl. "I'm a girly girl. [Boy-girl] is not something I'm interested in right now. I have a girlfriend."
She says she's a pothead.
Vanilla is 20. She measures 34B. She's tall and funny. We chat for a few minutes. In porn eight months, she's done about 80 movies. She wants to become either a paralegal or a make-up artist.
Vanilla grew up in Los Angeles. She graduated high school at age 16. She moved out of home soon after and went to work.
She lost her virginity at 14. "That's normal. It was tenth grade."
Vanilla has never been with a girl. "Just kissing. Never went any further. They tried but I didn't like it."
Have you done interracial?
"I have done interracial. It's not my favorite. It depends on the guy. I work with Mr. Marcus a lot. Brian Pumper (muscular pretty black guy) is not my favorite anymore because he's very rude."
Brian pulled Vanilla from the boxcover, she says, after she refused to go home with him after a shoot. "He had a contract with Red Light but he lost it because he refused to put me on the boxcover.
"I act a certain way on set, but off set I'm different. I have a boyfriend [of four years who's a butcher]. I'm normal."
At age 16, Vanilla hooked up with a PE teacher, 22, from another high school after a soccer match (she played center-forward). They made it in his car.
"If he was walking down the street, I probably would've hit on him. It's a lot more rare for a girl to get turned down than for a guy, so..."
Vanilla says her boyfriend doesn't watch her videos but she looks at his pictures. "He doesn't know that I've done a DP. I've only done two.
"He wants me to bring a girl home."
Would you feel jealous?
"Probably. Then again, he probably feels jealous when I come home from work."
Does he say, go brush your teeth?
Vanilla giggles. "He says, I want to smell the Listerine. He jokes to no end. My mom knows what I do. As does my little brother, 16."
What does he say?
"When are your friends coming over?"
He's been with a couple of porn girls?
She nods.
Did you set it up?
"Kinda. Unintentionally. They're all over him. He loves it. But now he's in Oregon, so he misses out on the action.
"I've lived in Northridge my whole life. His buddies will pop by hoping to see something."
Have his buddies hooked up with you?
"No. They're such kids. I remember when they were 11 and fat and insecure. Now they're 16 and can drive and they think they're cool. I live by a high school, so they holler at me when I walk to the gym. They don't know I'm in porn.
"I've only been recognized once, when I was in a porn shop and I was looking at my own tape.

Vanilla says she's monogamous outside the industry. "One thing I don't like about this [industry]. When you walk on a set, guys are either very respectful or they try to grab your tits before they say hello.
"I mainly work for Skeeter [Kerkove] and Metro, where everyone is married [and respectful] and we all go out for coffee afterwards.
"I remember one photographer on a set jacking off while taking pictures. I left. It was part of an instructional sex video. I think it was just a fun set by a people who had a bunch of money."
Vanilla had a 5:30am class at college. "I'm not going back until the fall. I'm trying to hoard money so I can buy a house."
Vanilla says her boyfriend got drunk and put on her skirt. "It scared me."
Vanilla has mixed feelings about a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. She voted for Kerry.
The last book she read was a couple of months ago -- Diary of a Heroine Addict.
When she was first in porn, Vanilla did a movie called The Babysitter for Cherry Boxx. You'd think she would have sex with the father, but no. She had sex with the baby in a crib. He was a scrawny guy. Vanilla says she almost ran out of the scene (and the industry) screaming. She found it disturbing.
Cali Foxx (a stripper) flew in from Fort Lauderdale yesterday for the talent call (she's yet to do a porn movie) and she's taking the red-eye home tonight.
I meet Kyla King and her husband Quinton. They're from Holland. They've been in porn for several years, but in Los Angeles for about six weeks. Kyla did about 100 videos in Europe and about six here. They have their own modeling agency -- Dutch Models. They met through porn. Together about three years, they've been married almost one year.
"I really want to be famous," says Kyla. "That is my dream. Same with most of the girls here."
Luke: "How would you compare the American attitude towards sex and porn with the Dutch attitude?"
Kyla: "It depends which people. Some people hate it and some people love it. It is the same in both countries."
Sofia Sandobar (from Brazil) is under the management of Harry Weiss of AdultStaffingServices.com. Harry runs the place. Sofia has the build and look of Gina Lynn.
In porn about six months, Sofia has done about 15 scenes. She's worked for Jill Kelly and will soon work for Vivid.
Directors Fred Lincoln (married seven times), Ron Sullivan (married six times) and Jay Shanahan (married five times) gather to discuss the demise of features and the likelihood of their getting gigs with Penthouse.
I hear that Rocco Siffredi was paid $150,000 by Vivid to do three movies. And that was a large part of the reason Janine was angry with him, because he was getting paid more than her.
"Janine is a nice person," says someone who worked with her recently, "but [a prima donna]. She'll call at 2am to ask for a particular type of condom."
I meet Jamie Lynn, Miss January 2005 for Penthouse. From Antelope Valley, she's lived in Southern California most of her life. Before she started nude modeling two years ago at age 21 (appearing first in Hustler where she says she looked like a deer in the headlights, photographer was Matty Klatt, Jamie does not include it on her site), she worked in sales. She has an ebullient outgoing personality. She smiles and laughs a lot.
She has natural C-cup breasts. She wears a big gold Penthouse key. She helps the girls with their paperwork and welcomes them to the talent call.
"She's a young sexy busty Gina Gershon," says Penthouse publicist Lainie Speiser.
Both of my handshakes with Jamie Lynn were unsatisfactory. Upon introduction and departure, I only managed a squeeze of several of her fingers. I didn't get any of that palm action that makes a handshake so satisfying.
This is a problem I have with a lot of women.
I seek to live my life according to Biblical prophecy. This means that I attempt to not shake hands with women or have any physical contact with these objects of temptation. Unfortunately, though I view myself as a moralist, I am susceptible to certain weaknesses of the flesh. Thus, there have been times over the past few years when I've shaken hands with beautiful young women (the old bags I completely shun, not entirely for religious reasons).

Burt: "We pride ourselves on lighting. That's the key to making us a cut above everyone else. We're about quality over quantity of scenes. Normally in the X-rated business, it is about getting sex scenes done as quickly as possible even though we will shoot six to eight scenes a day."
These words might sound cheap unless you've seen the quality of their work.
Burt: "Penthouse provides us with beautiful women. We find great locations. We are never in a hurry to light it. We use great make-up. We have a wardrobe stylist.
"We don't pay them like stars so we treat them like stars. We have limo companies who often pick up the girls for free.
"I never allow the crew to ask the girls for phone numbers. If they do, they're fired.
"The only time in 400 scenes that I talked a girl into doing this was in Arizona. When it got to the nude scene, she said, I can't do this."
Jamie Lynn says she doesn't mind fingers and toys going inside of her during a scene or photo shoot, but "no eating."
Jamie has signed a modeling contract with Lamborghini but she drives a regular American car so she won't worry about it.
Hank Londoner and his wife Susie shot her for Penthouse's January issue. Susie Londoner is her favorite nude photographer. "She gave me many compliments before the shoot and you can see the confidence that gave me in my eyes in her pictures."
Jamie says her great grandmother just died at 105. Jamie does not want to live past 75.
Rob Spallone walks up to Jamie and says, "Everything you say to him will be on the Internet."
Jamie: "That's fine."
Rob: "He'll make stuff up and twist things around."
Jamie has also appeared in High Society and Swank and various fetish magazines. She charges $100 per clothing set for a fetish shoot.
She says she does not get recognized in public unless she's signing at a convention.
Jamie has a boyfriend. He and her family know about her nude modeling work.
Luke: "You're not afraid of people."
Jamie: "Not at all."
Luke: "What clique did you hang out with in high school?"
Jamie says she hung out with no clique. She normally cut out of school at lunchtime. She regrets that now.
She says she was a good student when she would bother to go to class. "I liked school because it was a social activity. I never missed a party until my senior year."
She was a cheerleader during her freshman year. She ran cross-country.
"I kept developing. I found my figure [in tenth grade]."
She's smoked (about half a pack a day of Camels Filters at present) since she was 17. "It's time for me to smoke."
Luke: "When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?"
Jamie: "I wanted to be a mommy. Then I wanted to be a psychiatrist. Then I realized how many problems everybody has and I didn't want to listen to them. Then I wanted to be a lawyer."
Luke: "When did you lose your virginity?"
Jamie: "I'm not going to get into it. I hate those questions. I hate: What's your favorite fantasy. That's crap. Like I'm really going to tell you."
Jamie's the first nude model or porn star who hasn't answered that question.
Luke: "What do you love and hate about nude modeling?"
Jamie: "I hate the catty girls. The ones who think they're primadonnas. I like it when we're a team. There's never a day that I think, I don't want to go to work today."
Jamie loves the camera.
Luke: "How has it changed you to work as a nude model?"
Jamie: "It hasn't. It's helped me financially. That's it."
Luke: "Has it changed your view of men?"
Jamie: "No. It's changed my view of porn. I've completely ruined it for my little brother. When I tell him it is not even real..."
Luke: "When you were in high school and you saw these photos?"
Jamie: "I thought, how hot."
I sit next to Jordan Taylor and compose out loud what she should be saying to me: "Luke, you captured the real me as only you could. She giggles.
I look her in the eyes and (she's wearing a low cut top over bulging breasts) and ask her if those are real.

She giggles. "They're both real."
