AVN Expo Highlights
2003-01-13 08:07:57
* There were a lot of Mafia players at the show, hanging
out at the Bizarre Video booth and elsewhere. Some of them bookmakers
and money lenders. Most of them from New York, like Dom and Craig Marino,
some live in Las Vegas. It was like Appalachia, 1957, with this great
wiseguy gathering at the Bizarre Video booth.
* The most powerful Mafia guy in porn is Joseph Abinanti, who stopped
by the AVN Expo for two days. I was unable to get an interview with him.
I wonder why? None of these mob guys like to give interviews or to pose
for pictures. If only I were a cute woman giving lap dances at mob-controlled
strip clubs, then I could get the real scoop.
* The Cleveland Mafia has funded a porn company run by friends of mine.
The company has had numerous financial problems and the front guy for
it fears for his life.
* I had one sitdown dinner with some people from New York that I am not
allowed to write about. I had a nice mango pudding however and a fruit
plate. And I did not have to pay. My tape recorder was confiscated at
the beginning of the meal and I only got it back when I left.
* These Mafia guys sure have a lot of cash that they love to spend on
gash. They hit the big strip clubs like Saphires (controleld by the Galardis)
and spend thousands of dollars on lap dances and booze. These mob guys
drink a lot and eat fine food, and tend to develop big bellies, and have
severe angry hangovers that make them want to smash inquiring reporters.
But they're babe magnets. Chicks hit on them, blow them and do other things
I can't describe because of my tender morality.
* AVN managing editor Mikey Ramone, number 251 in the Houston 500 gangbang,
is taking the heat from porners who believe awards were fixed at the show
Saturday night. An insider to the process says Ramone decided six awards.
An insider says the final awards, including a Best Director to John Stagliano,
do not reflect the views of the majority of the judges of which he was
aware. Three of the guys on the voting commission were astounded when
they saw six awards going to other people than who they thought had won.
When Gene Ross and Ken Wood quit AVN in the summer of 2000, they cited
chapter and verse of various awards being fixed for political and business
reasons.
* There was a big fight and mad scramble to pick up trophies after the
AVN Awards Saturday night. There was inadequate security and folks who
didn't belong were stealing trophies left and right. T.T. Boy, inducted
into the AVN Hall of Fame, was ready to rumble. I know of several winners,
including David Aaron Clark who won last year for Best Screenplay, who
had their trophies stolen and never received a replacement.
* Many porners, like Ava Vincent and Mike McCormick, were upset that their
names weren't mentioned in the incomplete reading of the nominees.
* I hear Larry Flynt Publications is gunning to buy not just VCA but also
Wicked Pictures.
* Wicked, VCA, Vivid, Metro and Digital Playground all spent between $120-$160,000
each at the AVN Expo. Booths cost around $40,000.
* Extreme Associates is bouncing checks left and right. I hear that Rob
Black's Dad settled his duplication bill with Vinnie DeStefano. Video
duplicators face tough times as the industry switches increasingly to
DVD.
*I hear that Gene Ross's mother died last week and he's extremely depressed
and not answering or returning calls. He's going around bald these days.
* John Decker's ex-wife Roxanne Hall has had a breast job and is back
in the business, working for Extreme Associates.
Thursday, January 9. 9:35AM. I arrive at Rob Spallone's place near Magic
Mountain. I pack my suit and bag into Rob's black Mercedes and get in
the back seat.
"What am I? Your chaffeur?" asks Rob.
"You mean you want me to sit in the front seat?"
"Yeah."
I climb in the front seat and by 9:55AM, we're on the road.
Rob drives at 80-100 mph while telling stories.
Rob was on Night Calls Radio Monday with host Juli Ashton, former VCA
contract girl, and a redhead Rob thinks is cute. Rob says he was the bomb.
The hour whizzed by. He didn't want to stop talking.
Rob shot 53 movies in 2002.
We listen to K-Earth 101 radio playing greatest hits of the 60s, 70s and
80s.
Luke: "Why do you live up here with all the white people?"
Rob: "I'm into white people. The schools up here are good."
Rob's wife is half-Puerto Rican.
Luke: "What do you think are some of the greatest contributions of Puerto
Ricans to American culture?"
Rob: "Nothing. They're like Mexicans."
Rob has made a resolution that he won't hit anyone this year at the show.
Rob: "I might be verbally abusive and if someone raises ahand, then it's
a different story. Every year I go to the show, I get in a fight."
Rob's friend, the manager of actor Ray Gandolfini, says he can get Rob
a reading for a bit part on The Sopranos TV show.
Dino Bravo meets us at Ballys. Dino is rooming with performer Guy DeSilva
at the Tam O'Shanter. Rob is paying Dino $100 to drive us around for the
next three days in Rob's Mercedes.
Dino, a porn stud, looks like a young Dean Martin and can sing many of
his songs as well.
Dino says a friend from New York, Adam, told him, 'You're coming to dinner
with me 8PM Friday.'
Dino says it is not that simple. Producer and casting agent Robert Lombard
is throwing a party Friday night at his hotel suite and he feels obliged
to show up. Robert gets him three gigs a month.
Rob: "Do you think he'd be crushed if you didn't show? He wouldn't think
about it for five seconds."
Dino: "Look, he's a nice guy. He helps me. I want to be there for him.
Is there anything wrong with that?"
Rob and I walk up the AVN Expo at the Sands and we run into Asia Carrera
and Bud Lee. We cadge a badge from Asia to get me in. I go to Ed at VCA
and get a pass for Rob.
[Asia was the first person I recognized at the show and the last person
I photographed at the show Sunday afternoon.]
The show was jammed with fans earlier Thursday afternoon. Fans get in
at 1PM each day. Now it is past 3PM and the show is far from packed.
I see Mercedes signing at the Vivid booth. Salesman Howard Levine walks
around inside.
Julie Meadows, Chloe and Tawny Lions sign for VCA.
I see Adult Press Club owner Marc Medoff chatting with Jane Hamilton.
I run into nice-guy Rod Fontana. His wife Aliza Harper, French porn star,
just gave birth to a baby. Rod's doing five lines for Extreme.
Ex-Vivid girl Sky walks by with two heavily tattooed young men.
Blonde Gina Lynn signs at Legend.
Dolorina signs for Smash Pictures. I run into James DiGiorgio and Luc
Wylder.
I run into Darklady who's been exchanging email almost every day with
Jim Goad. They're Portland's top two sex writers who come at the subject
from opposite approaches. Darklady aka Therasa Reed is sex-positive. Goad
is caustic.
Victoria Paris, in glasses, and a skinny Christy Canyon sign pictures.
They look fine but a lot of other female porn stars, who looked hot two
years ago now look skanky. I'd like to name names but I think it'd be
cruel. Let the pictures tell the story.
Fans get porn stars to hug them for pictures. For many guys, it will be
the most beautiful women they will ever get to touch. I'm sure this is
true for many guys in wheelchairs. Many porn stars take particular care
to be kind to the handicapped.
Barbie Banners signs for Adult Stars Magazine.
Some porn stars flash though show rules strictly prohibit this behavior.
Many of the booths play hardcore footage.
Why do I spend so much time taking pictures rather than engaging in heart
to heart conversations with porners? I fear that I fear intimacy.
Why do I do almost no interviews? Instead I'm just a wandering Jew through
the giant diaspora of the AVN Expo. Five years ago, I would've been trying
to secure every interview I could. Now many important players won't talk
to me on the record and those that do know my reputation and are thus
careful in what they say. So I find I get the best scoop by just engaging
in casual conversation, not interviews, with my tape recorder deep in
my pocket and not running.
I hang out at the VCA booth with friends Medoff and Spallone. Ruby, the
busty lusty redhead, comes over. She says her younger brother found he
was not cut out for theindustry. She says she's never going back to the
Bunny Ranch after a conflict with owner Dennis Hoff. Ruby used to live
at the brothel.
Paul Fishbein comes over and shakes my hand. He looks tired. His hair
is graying. He's affable and cracks jokes with Medoff and Spallone, who
offers to take care of his problems. Marc gives all of us a free Adult
Press Club t-shirt.
The biggest crowd of the day is for Jenna Jameson at the Digital Sin booth.
She has her own bodyguard. I say hi. I'm not sure if she recognizes me.
She smiles and goes on with her business.
Jewel DeNyle has been signing since 11AM and is tired. She pretends to
be asleep at her booth so fans won't bother her for an autograph.
Devinn from Jill Kelly Productions says I look familiar. We met in June
1999. She's still with her boyfriend Johnathan of the rock group Korn
and she still doesn't do guys. She's now a brunette.
I'm greeted by many people. The only hostility I feel comes from Tony
Montana and his wife Laurie Holmes.
Near the end of the day, I look for Adella, the publicist of Digital Playground.
She's hungover. She was hanging out last night with AVN's Tod Hunter,
Mike South, James DiGiorgio and Carly Myne. I ask if Carly is around.
I've never met her. Adella walks me next door to the Metro booth and introduces
us.
I have dinner with Adella, Carly, Jared Rutter from Adam Film World, Mike
South, Tim Case and his fiance Felicia Fox.
Fox has just finished an oral scene with Dave Cummings and nobody wants
to kiss her. She wears a highly revealing top, barely covering her large
full inviting breasts.
Duc to Tim: "How does it make you feel when men tell you your wife's got
a nice rack?"
Tim says it's fine. It's when they tell him, 'You're a better man than
me. I couldn't handle my wife working in the sex industry.'" That annoys
him.
Samantha Phillips walks by. Joone, Nic Orleans, Robby D, Barret Moore
and the Digital Playground crew have dinner next to us.
I get into a long discussion with a fellow scribe about the morality of
porn. My main argument that the industry is destructive is the paucity
of lasting relationships in it. Scribe says it is no worse than other
industries.
I walk back to Ballys from the Venetian, arriving at 8:40PM.
Russell Hampshire is on the wagon. He had a heart attack this past year.
He doesn't want to come to Las Vegas where he will run into temptation
to drink.
Betty Hampshire takes the VCA crew to dinner.
Rob saw a familiar face today. 'Do I know you?' The guy said, 'Yeah, I'm
Joey from Whitestone.' Rob's friend from childhood is now hanging out
with Jenna Jameson and her entourage.
10:30pm. I'm working on my laptop in my room. There's a knock on the door.
I say, 'Come in.' It's Kat Kleevage. She starts yelling, "What are you
doing in my room?"
Luke: "Rob said I could stay here."
Kat goes over to the bed where I've rested for an hour: "What are you
doing in my bed? What are your pants doing under my pillow? What are your
clothes doing in my closet?"
We eventually come to an amicable conclusion to our misunderstanding.
I sleep well.
Helpful writes: Maybe she could get together with Penelope Pumkins and
Monica Melons and form a support group? What price does an aged harpy
like Kat command on the whore circuit?
Duc says: $300 an hour.
Jack writes: Fred, please provide us with a point of comparison and let
us know what a patent lawyer of similar seniority
commands.
Khunrum writes: An unfair comparison my dear Amalek. Fred does not sport
a pair of silicone breasts, nor has he spent an entire night in bed sleeping
with DUC.
Which group has more fun in life (assuming idential hourly billing rates):
whores or patent lawyers?
Fred writes: The young lady in question has the billing rate of a senior
associate or very junior partner in a major firm. She's about on a par
with a fairly senior (15-20 years of experience) solo practitioner. She
probably has less overhead than we do, however. She doesn't have to deal
with monthly billing or docketing.
In order to do an adequate comparison I need to know how many years she's
been practicing. Luke, do you have this info?
I have a feeling that in her profession, billing rate
goes down with years of practice, whereas in my profession, billing rate
goes up.
I suppose if someone wanted to optimize their income,
they should spend the first 10 years of their career
practicing her profession, and then switch over to my
profession.
Khunrum writes: "BY THE END OF ROD LURIE'S investigation, it was clear
that Enquirer and Star reporters "blackmailed" a number of major stars
into becoming "friends" of the tabloids."
DUC....
In light of the sleazy antics these tabloids will stoop to, are you not
concerned about your own reputation? We have a journalist of your stature
spending the night in bed with one Kat Kleevage. Would it not have been
wiser to shell out the $29.95 at Motel Six rather than compromise the
integrity of the DUC name? Of course your dirty little secret is safe
with us, your Advisory Committee. Bamboo shoots under our nails could
not make us talk. Still, others are not so loyal.
Jack writes: Which group has more fun in life (assuming idential
hourly billing rates): whores or patent lawyers?
January 10, 2003
6:20AM. I take a shower.
6:40AM. Kat Kleevage orders room service.
Kat first had sex for money at age 16 in San Diego. "It was a good experience.
It makes it easy to go on working in the sex industry. You don't understand
what it will do to you later. I took away my chances in life by doing
something so simple. I could've gone to school but sex was too easy to
sell."
7AM: Rob Spallone comes in. He got roaring drunk last night. He went to
Saphires, a huge new strip club, with friends from New York. It cost him
and his friends $800 to get into a private room. Girls crawled all over
them all night wanting to give lap dances.
Rob wants to get some of the girls into porn. He gave away all his business
cards.
Kat: "You shouldn't do that, try to ruin a girl's life when she's only
dancing topless."
Rob complains that his wife went into the archives of l-keford.com and
flipped when she saw pictures of Rob hanging out with naked porn chicks.
She tells their kids, "Look at your father. He's with the pigs."
Rob's wife Helena complains: "You said you didn't touch the girls."
Rob: "Duc, if my wife ever left me. I'd come kill you and then I'd blow
my brains out."
Helena asks Rob, "What's his new site?" Rob doesn't tell her about setgo.com.
Rob says he fought with his wife for seven months because of me. I feel
terrible.
Rob: "No, you don't."
Kat: "He writes stuff that almost gets you divorced and now he says he's
your friend. That is the thing with Rob. When he came in to the industry,
he was at odds with everyone."
Rob to Luke: "By the way, you parked in two spots, my wife said."
Rob: "Jack from Cinderella and Gene Ross used to be good friends. Every
time Gene came, he was Mitch Spinelli's desk. I'd get Gene food and drinks.
He was nice. I started fighting with Jim South [in 1998] and Gene did
an interview with me. But he never printed it."
I hear that Screw publisher Al Goldstein was arrested on a flight from
New York to Las Vegas for telling one of the stewardesses that he wanted
to f--- her.
8:45AM. Rob sends Kat and I down to the pit boss to get five comps for
breakfast. Pit boss says the comps were already given out. Rob, upon hearing
the news, becomes furious at Bally's employee Peter Kinsler. Rob accuses
Peter of stealing all his comps. Rob makes a big scene. Rob swears he's
going to punch out Peter as soon as he sees him.
Rob gets a phone call. "The only way she works for me is if she takes
it in the ass," says Rob. Everybody laughs. Rob calls Kat "Big Tits."
Rob offers to get the blackjack dealer into the show for free.
A pit boss eventually gives Rob five comps for breakfast because Rob's
a big spender at the hotel.
The buffet is immense. Dino Bravo and his roommate Guy DeSilva join us
for breakfast. Dino dropped $400 gambling last night and is down to $8
in his pocket.
Rob tells stories about Dino Bravo not being able to get wood.
Rob: "He begged me for work [on the movie No Exit, directed by Jim Malibu].
He said, 'Rob, I promise. I promise.'
"Jim's shooting the scene in the backyard of the house and he has no wood.
The crew is freaking. We've been wating for two hours now."
Dino: "I saved that movie."
Rob: "I call a little meeting. I clear the set. Dino and Ruby are playing
on the blanket."
Dino: "Blanket? It was wet grass."
Rob says to the camera crew: "You keep the camera rolling. I'm going to
walk in to the scene and just keep the cameras on.
"I walk over. 'Dino, let me talk to you for a minute.' Dino says, 'Rob,
I'm sorry. It's cold.' I say, 'Dino, that's no excuse. We f--- in the
snow. We do it in 110 degrees. You were hired to do a job and you can't
do it.' We're talking by the edge of the pool. I throw him in the pool.
They catch it all. Within two seconds, he was out of the pool.
"Then, I didn't want to ruin the movie. I didn't want to spend money.
I made the behind-the-scenes cameraman bring them into this little bedroom
and they got through the scene. The kid is the worst ever."
Dino: "Now, my side of the story. It was freezing cold. The girl Ruby
was shivering. Her lips were purple. I saved that movie. That movie was
about what directors incur on porno sets. I intentionally did not get
wood to show America what directors have to go through. Then we went in
a little side room and I rocked."
Rob: "You're the worst."
Dino: "Then why do I get work?"
Rob: "Jeff Coldwater for $100?"
Dino: "$75."
Rob: "I appreciated Dino so much that I never hired him again. Wait till
you hear the behind the scenes interview on the DVD, what I do to you.
This guy should be in gay movies."
Kat: "Do you know how sweet he is?"
Rob: "He's the sweetest guy you ever met."
Dino: "In the role, I was a frustrated lounge singer. I couldn't make
a living. I did porno for extra money. I was singing. I was doing all
those beautiful melodies for extra money."
After breakfast, I run into Joe Spallone talking to two elderly gentlemen.
I wonder why he doesn't introduce me. I go off and find Rob and tell him
his Dad wants to talk to him. I bring Rob over.
Rob: "That's Vinny the Duplicator. Go over to the front door and meet
me there."
I go over to the front door, passing Vinny DeStephano, Michael Esposito
and company. Eventually Rob comes over with Tommy Sinnopoli. All of these
are connected guys. Dino drives us over to the Sands for the convention.
Tommy laughs with me. "Everyone believes that what they read on the internet
is true. The pen is mightier than the sword."
I start off at the Digital Playground booth where I get an interview with
new contract girl Jessie Jane. Adella hovers around to make sure I'm not
wolf.
Jessie is a sexy petite blonde with pumped-up breasts, from Oklahoma via
Texas, who's yet to do her first scene.
Luke: "How did you get connected with Digital Playground?"
Jessie: "I read an article on Tera Patrick. I went to her website and
found out who she worked for. Then I contacted them and they flew me out
from Texas.
"I have my first scene next week with Devon in her new movie No Limits.
Then I start shooting my film at the end of January."
Luke: "What's your film about?"
Jessie: "I don't know. You'll have to ask Joone."
Jane worked at Hooters restaurant in Texas and worked for Hawaiin Tropics
models.
Luke: "What propelled you to want to get into this industry?"
Jane: "I've always wanted to be a big sex symbol and Hooters wasn't enough
for me. I want people to watch me and to be turned on by me."
Luke: "Were you a cheerleader in high school?"
Jane: "Yeah. I did cheer and song and competed in a separate dance studio.
I played soccer."
Jane enjoys the novels of Danielle Steele. She recently moved to Los Angeles.
I see a long line for Ginger Lynn. She can't bend down to pick something
off the ground because her dress is so tight.
I run into Jasmine Klein, who I met on Rob Spallone's set three weeks
ago. She reads a book or two a week and is a mother of three. I tease
her about her nomination for Best Anal sex scene. She hopes she doesn't
win.
I run into Eric Danville and his wife Abby Ehman. I've known them for
years but we've never met.
Several people comment on the dramatic difference between Internext and
the AVN Expo. The Internext is aimed at webmasters and it is more geeky
and technological and business-oriented while the AVN Expo is aimed at
fans.
I see Kelly Erikson, Metro's new contract girl, signing autographs most
of the day. Holly Hollywood, who just did her first boy-girl with Metro,
and April in white pants.
The organizers of Wednesday night's Players Ball are angry again with
the quality of service they received from Club 2K at the Venetian. Jenna
Jameson and Brianna Banks were hassled by rude security guards.
XXX: "A security guard yells at Brianna and slams a door before we even
open up the VIP area. We start yelling at the guy, 'You better watch who
you talk to. Fantasyman is a major sponsor and he's already warned you
guys that somebody could get hurt if you don't take care of our VIPs.
We get in the security guard's face. He takes five chairs and starts throwing
them around.
"After that, it was just a total clusterf--- trying to get in. I feel
bad for a lot of people."
Luke: "You always have problems with the Venetian."
XXX: "It's the venue. They call it organized crime for a reason. We're
never doing anything at Club C2K ever again."
Luke: "Aside from that, it was a success?"
XXX: "Yeah. FM [Ron Levi of Cyberotica.com] was pleased. He says it's
the best show he's ever done. Profit-wise, this was the best show I've
ever had in my life. Everyone else says the same thing. A lot of people
didn't exhibit. IGallery, Babenet were not there. We felt the loss of
those bigger companies. Silvercash had an amazing booth. There were amazing
parties every night. RB [Rich Botto] had a party. He's never left adult.
Joseph Elkind is walking around. A humbled, new and improved JoeE."
I hear that Autralian internet pornographer Scott Phillips is a short
stocky muscular bald guy. He ran into Kevin Blatt at Internext. KB said
to him, 'Hey, there's L-ke F-ord!' Scott PB looks around. "Where? Where?"
KB was just kidding.
Lensman was spotted with Ron Levi drinking Chrystal champagne until 5AM.
I talk to Vivid contract boy Bobby Vitalie, who's married to Brianna Banks.
Luke: "Have you had plenty of arrests?"
Bobby: "Plenty of rest, yes. Not plenty of arrests."
I spot James DiGiorgio (who's gained a lot of weight over the past couple
of years) chatting with Nic Andrews, Digital Playground director.
Jim: "I hope that by the time I get up from this conversation, I will
be a better director and a better pornographer. I figure that I am sitting
at the feet of the master."
Luke: "Do you notice that he gets to make real movies?"
Jim: "I notice. I can't even sleep at night I'm so jealous."
Nic: "Print that."
Jim raps with Nic: "He's going to print it up and do it real negative."
Luke: "Why don't you tell him to his face the nasty things you've written
about him on your website?"
Jim: "He says every time I rip him up, they sell another 100 DVDs."
Luke: "What would happen if I brought Michael Raven over?"
Jim: "When was the last time Nic Cramer had a hit?"
Nic: "There used to be all this friendly competition [but now there's
little competition for big budget features]."
Jim lobbies Adella to become a guest host on the Teraless Show for Digital
Playground.
I seen Sunrise Adams, putative nice of Sunset Thomas, signing for Vivid.
Scores stripper Savannah Samson is a new Vivid girl who's appeared on
Howard Stern.
I chat with Steve Seidman and Dennis Hof.
Dennis says they're working out the details for a pay-per-view Rolling
Stones concert at the House of Blues. They would block off part of Sunset
Boulevard between Doheny and the Whiskey A Go Go for a military helicopter
to land. Then Sunset Thomas would drive out a hummer with the Rolling
Stones inside.
I chat with Daisy Chain at the Elegant Angel booth. She's doing something
with the start time of 4:20, a universal symbol of marijuana use.
Daisy Chain: "Because I smoke a lot of pot. I'm a big stoner and I'm proud
of it."
I hear about a New York merchant bank which is quietly funding a porn
internet company.
Daisy: "The show has had a strange energy for me so far. Hitting a lot
of walls. Our bus had a flat tire out of Barstow. We had to be towed here
and didn't get to our rooms until 5AM. I don't know a lot of talent. It
seems there a lot of new faces. This is my fourth show."
Luke: "Jill Kelly Productions has a huge booth but nobody's there."
Daisy: "I know. They're all rock stars. They won't show up until about
four."
CBS's newsmagazine 60 Minutes and correspondent Steve Kroft are at the
show for a segmont on the porn industry.
Jim: "I'd probably grovel at their feet, would they please do anything
to help me out."
Sales whiz Danny Gorman has moved over to Metro from Sin City.
I discuss the origins of the terms "muckraker" and "soapbox" with Video
Team owner Christian Mann, porn's resident intellectual. Mann, a superb
spokesman for the porn industry, gave an interview to Steve Kroft.
I hear that Flashman was a singer who had one hit with Flash Cadillac
and the Continental Kids back in 1964. Friday night he gets into Rob's
Mercedes. He's riding in the front seat, Dino Bravo driving, when they
stop to pick up Spallone. Rob yells at Flashman to get out of his seat
and to sit in the back.
Flashman is apparently the unofficial mayor of Las Vegas and goodwill
ambassador.
I hear that Chuck Martino has been going out with Amythiest the past couple
of months. It seems serious. No dramatics this time around for Martino.
Chuck and Amythiest will produce movies together.
The Sin City twins, Taylor and Tyler, are chatty and adorable. They got
their breast jobs done one week apart. Scott Stein, their PR man, says
they are only 24. One of them is going back in for another breast job.
They did one movie for Metro then walked into Sin City.
The much awaited entrance of Tera Patrick and her husband Evan Seinfeld
to the AVN Expo came Friday afternoon. They went over to the AIM booth
where Tera started signing. A Digital Playground lawyer went over to AIM
and informed them that Tera was under exclusive contract to DP and broke
up the signing. Evan got in the face of the lawyer and started yelling
at him.
Tera and Evan then went around soliciting work from other companies, such
as Jill Kelly Productions. Tera and Evan were accompanied by about six
Hells Angels bikers. Then Tera and Evan left the show.
JasonCurious.com reports: The drama continues between Digital Playground
and Tera Patrick, as the contract star made the rounds at The 2003 AVN
Expo this past weekend, stopping by virtually everyone’s booth but Digital’s.
Patrick even devoted some of her time to AIM HealthCare, signing for their
booth with co-founder and former porn star, Sharon Mitchell, on Friday
afternoon, until the Playground’s lawyers reportedly approached the booth
and threatened to physically remove her. According to her contract, any
promotional signings, photo shoots, or video shoots in the adult industry
must be booked through Patrick’s agents at Digital Playground – and they’re
not letting down on their stance. Word has it that if Patrick wants to
remain an active part of the adult community, she’ll have to do it with
Digital or wait another three-plus years until her contract with them
has expired.
Patrick was photographed by fans during her walk on the convention floor,
looking more exhausted than a Glitter-era Mariah Carey, alongside her
new husband, sporting a modest wedding ring. The super star of the XXX
screen was recently axed from her job hosting Playboy TV’s Nightcalls
411, when her new hubby caused a scene on the set, for what insiders called
“the last time,” inferring it had happened more than once. The man in
question, a former member of a little-known 80’s punk band and a guest
star of HBO’s Oz, has gained a reputation around the adult world for controlling,
and in some cases ruining, most of Patrick’s affairs. Meanwhile, the happy
couple insists they’re currently fielding offers for Tera Patrick’s own
mainstream television show without the help of Digital Playground.
I hear that the Friday night JKP party was jammed. Many porn press and
photographers were mad that they got stuck in the human traffic jam and
couldn't get in. They blame publicist Jason Sechrest who they say holed
up in the room during the debacle and didn't help them.
Jason Sechrest writes: The JKP party was a huge success. It sucks that
I had to play the bad guy and send 300 people on our guest list home,
but that's my job, I guess. Miles Long had made a deal with someone at
Ghost Bar to have it reserved for us that evening -- and it turns out
the person he made the deal with didn't even work at Ghost Bar. So at
the last minute, Jill invited people up to the Real World suite at Palms
Hotel. In the beginning of the evening, I was downstairs pulling VIPs
out of the line for Ghost Bar to send them up to the suite and telling
everyone else they had to go home. But about a half an hour later, Jill
said word was already out about the suite # and she had a line of 20 -
30 people lined up at her door who she didn't know. So I was instructed
to stand in front of the suite all evening and make sure the people getting
in were the right people, while Tyler Faith and Haven took on the duty
of pulling people in from Ghost Bar downstairs. In the end, it was a rockin'
party... just sucks that more people couldn't have attended. That suite
only held 100 people, which meant cutting 300 off the guest list. :o(
Jill wants me to apologize on behalf of the entire JKP family and assure
all press that we will make it up to them next year. JKP has always been
known for its hot CES parties and next year will be no exception.

Saturday night I ride down in the elevator at Ballys with Michael Esposito
of Gentlemen's Video. He says I'm "a breath of fresh air" in the industry.
That's better than getting whacked, I suppose.
Michael was so friendly and kind to me, I didn't have the heart to tell
him I was back reporting on the industry. What I told him is true - I'm
working on a book on Hollywood.
Man, I've got to stay out of the way of duplicator Vinny DeStephano. He's
no fan of mine.
I arrive at the Venetian at 8:20PM for the AVN Awards Show. There are
already hundreds of fans lined up. I walk down the aisle surrounded by
fans and eventually burrow my way in and start snapping photos of porners
as they walk by.
Porn star Aria recognizes me and gives me a big hut. The fans around me
gawk. They want to know who I am. What did I do to deserve that hug? For
some reason, it is important to me to not be perceived as a gawking fan
but rather as a professional reporter. My ego is fragile.
I'm gratified as a number of porners wave to me as they go by. I chat
with Julie Rage, who now lives in Atlanta. She refuses to let me take
a picture of her.
Bridgett and Skeeter Kerkove come by with Nakita Denise and her Hungarian
boyfriend. Skeeter offers me a free pass to the AVN Awards. I eagerly
accept and move out of the line of fans into the moving stream of players.
A security guard thinks I'm a fan and motions me to get out of the way
of the porners. I produce my pass and he leaves me alone.
Anna Mills tells me she's thrilled to go to Paris with director Andrew
Blake.
Normally at show I only take pictures of Julia Ann, the most beautiful
woman in porn, but now we're friendly and chat. I learn she signed with
Wicked Pictures last March. She married director Michael Ravel while I
was away from the industry.
Julia Ann is a tall slim blonde with pumped up breasts and classic beauty.
Julia Ann did a scene with black man Mr. Marcus that got many kudos.
Pat Myne (formerly married to Shelby Myne) has married porn star Brittany
Foster. They've only done scenes together the past seven months.
I chat with porn star Monique Alexander who was recently fired by Sin
City after 18-months with the company.
Wicked Pictures director Brad Armstrong and Wicked contract girl Stormy
have been together romantically for about eight months. I see them everywhere
together. Brad brought her into the industry. He used to be married to
Jenna Jameson and formerly dated Dyanna Lauren and other hot looking porn
chicks.
T.T. Boy, normally bitter at AVN, shows up to collect his award for entry
into AVN's Hall of Fame. T.T. Boy's performing career with the major companies
was effectively ended by VCA owner Russell Hampshire after T.T. in 1998
had forceful sex with a VCA employee. Some described the incident as rape.
Russ said T.T. had to get into anger management classes. T.T. refused.
So Russ made a few calls and effectively ended T.T. Boy's performing career
with the major companies like Vivid, Wicked, Adam & Eve, etc.
Tera Patrick, her hubby Evan Seinfeld and six Hells Angels have their
own table at the AVN Awards.
Though nobody will say it, I sense that Digital Playground enjoyed having
a show without theatrics from Tera. I doubt that DP co-owner and principle
shooter Joone will shoot her again. If she comes back to DP, she'll be
reduced to shooting for Robby D. The horror, the horror.
I chat with Seymore Butts aka Adam Glasser in front of his Showtime crew.
Luke: "I thought you sold your company and you were gone?"
Seymore: "I did a licensing deal. I didn't sell anything."
Luke: "You disappeared for a year."
Seymore: "I was getting my house back together. That court case [obscenity
trial that Seymore won] on top of all the other court cases was a tremendous...devastating."
Luke: "Will your kid be on your show?"
Seymore: "In the appropriate spots when normal father-son activities take
place..."
Luke: "Does he help with the boxcover art and the packaging of the videos?"
Seymore: "That's very cute."
Luke: "Does he get surly when you ask him to mow the lawn and..."
Seymore: "Pick out a few chromes [slides]?"
Luke: "Are you still having fights?"
Seymore: "The only person I used to fight with was you. Don't you remember
writing things like being scared of being punched by me? Or flinching
when I came up to you?"
Luke: "Yeah. Do you have any feuds in the industry anymore?"
Seymore: "Well, you're back. No, I didn't but now you're back, I expect
to kick it right back up to where we left off. Aside from you, no more
feuds."
Luke: "Have you changed as you aged?"
Seymore: "I've learned to pick and choose my battles more wisely. My priorities
have changed. Some of the things that bothered me in the past don't bother
me as much now."
Luke: "Do you ever regret getting involved in this industry?"
Seymore: "I have issues with how it effects my personal life. Not my family,
I have that under control, but how it effects me with my relationships
with women. The possibilities of getting married, more children, and having
that nuclear family that I thought I always wanted to have."
Luke: "Do you think you can meet a woman who will provide you with that
while you're being followed around by a crew from Showtime?"
Seymore: "If people hear the name, 'Seymore Butts', the mind jumps into
huge preconceived notions of what it is like to be Seymore Butts. That
my life is an orgy all the time. The reality is that I am a normal guy
living in a strange world. I do all the normal things. I wake my son up.
I cook him breakfast. I deal with the problems of having a house and arranging
for babysitters. Christmas and Hanukkah. Introducing him to sports. I
think the people who see it will consider me more of a normal guy but
also the industry being filled with more normal people like me just having
unusual jobs. That's the only difference between us and those people who
are not in this industry - our unusual jobs."
Luke: "Did you have a Christmas tree?"
Seymore, who is Jewish: "I had a menorah (Jewish candlestick) and a Christmas
tree. I call it Hanumass. Santa Clausberg visited and took care of the
family. All right? Is that enough with you?"
Tera Patrick was supposed to host this AVN show but was replaced by Chloe.
Sin City's twins get generous exposure as the trophy girls who escort
guests off the stage.
About 5000 people get into the AVN Show, which starts with dinner at 8:30PM,
(none left for those who get to the food after 9:30PM). The show starts
around 10PM. People start streaming out at 11:30.
There's no question that AVN runs a professional ship. AVN has become
a behemoth in the industry. They are the 800-pound gorilla. AVN's Awards
Show gets bigger and more glamorous every year.
Vince Neil of Motley Crue opens the show singing "Girls, Girls, Girls"
with the Stingers band of Mark Stone and his brother and company.
Vince stars in the only video that shows ex-Vivid girl Janine doing a
guy.
I get restless. I couldn't care less who wins what awards and don't even
bother to track them. I wander around the room and talk to people. I nod
to Mikey Ramone. I see Steve Hirsch, Vivid owner, for the only time at
the show, sitting up front. I spot Jim English, head of Playboy TV.
Rob Spallone sits right in front of the stage. I sit behind manager Lucky
Smith and his date and Steven St. Croix who appears to be back in porn
fulltime.
I wander out around midnight and chat with James DiGiorgio and Jace Rocker.
When I tell Jimmy about Evan and Tera and their Hells Angels, he says,
'Nigger, please.'
I don't understand what this means and why Jimmy feels the need to use
a racial epithet but then again, I don't understand most of what I write
and report and quote...
Dino Bravo introduces me to veteran porn star Jeannie Pepper. She scowls
at me. Dino suggests she give me an interview.
Jeannie: "No, he only wants bad stuff about the industry."
Dino suggests production manager Adam give me an interview. Adam refuses.
Adam: "I think what he does is bad for the industry."
Montana Gunn says she's broken up with Mike and moved to LA three weeks
ago.
Montana: "Everyone looks so good. They're off the drugs."
I'm stunned at how dramatically many porn girls are aging. But I won't
name names.
Perhaps I'm too friendly with many of the people I write about and no
longer have the courage to write bad things about them.
1/12/03
Jacklyn Lick covers her face when I go to take a picture of her.
I chat with Biff Malibu aka Chris Alexander, owner of Anabolic Video.
Biff: "So, you're doing your own distribution?"
What? I've never had distribution. I don't have product. I'm only a journalist.
He must be confused. I remind him I'm only a journalist. We shake hands.
He covers his face when I go to take a picture of him.
The AVN Expo effectively climaxed at the AVN Awards Show Saturday night.
Attendance is spare today, Sunday. Porn fans must be in church. A lot
of porners look hungover - particularly Wicked's David Crawford (went
to bed at 6AM) and Rob Spallone (went to bed at 5AM). I was in bed at
1:30AM but I feel headachey and hungover. And I don't even drink. Just
the loud noise at the AVN Show and the cigarette smoke.
The Wicked booth is right next to a homosexual porn booth.
Julia Ann: "The best part is the guys walk by... Ninety-five percent are
heterosexual men trying to get our autograph. Somebody will see something,
like Boy Scout outfits. Someone will say, 'Ohmigod, there are Boy Scout
outfits.'
"Ten people will turn and they didn't expect to see this [homosexual porn]
and they will go 'Aaargh,' and turn away and there's just this tragic
look that we see."
Wicked PR man Daniel Metcalf: "It works for us because it forces their
attention to look over here."
Daniel kids me about my pass to the show. It reads, 'Jim South, World
Modeling.' Thanks Jim.
Julia Ann: "I don't really know any of the gay people and I'm much more
entertained watching people I don't know [have sex] than people I do know."
Luke: "I do not want to see anyone I know having sex. I would not want
to see you in video..."
Julia Ann: "Hey..."
David Crawford: "I'm not even that jaded."
Julia: "I would rather watch gay porn than straight porn."
David Crawford wears black fingernail polish. He says it's something he
picked up during his rockn'roll days. He says he forgot to bring polish
remover to Vegas.
I kibbitz with Juli Ashton about Rob Spallone's love for her redheaded
chost Tiffany Granath.
Juli: "She's as feisty as he is."
I meet Bob Berkowitz producer Jamye Waxman for the first time.
Jamye: "I'm writing a column for Playgirl and for Steppin Out magazine
(New Jersey publication. I use the name "J.Me" and it's a Sex in the City
type column. I want to be a writer one day. Ok, you can stop taping. You're
always interviewing me. Always."
Luke: "Was Bob here?"
Jamye: "No. He has a cohost Donna Barnes (model, actress) who was here
[for TV show Naked New York]."
Luke: "Does Bob get naked?"
Jamye: "No. There's no nudity."
Luke: "Who sponsors it?"
Jamye: "New York Sports Club. BMW buys ads. New Line Cinema. It's slowly
building. We've just been renewed for another 13 weeks. It's five nights
a week, an hour a night, and I'm the only person booking it. I swear I
will not book shows anymore. This is the last time ever. I want to do
other things."
Luke: "What was it like working for [fiery NY talkshow host] Bob Grant?"
Jamye: "He's a nice man. He's sexually liberal. He's really smart. He's
good radio. He gets it.
"We went to a Republican convention, which is hard for me to do. A daughter
of someone famous turned to me and said, 'The problem with education these
days is that we're teaching our kids to put on condoms instead of telling
them to duck and cover.'
"That was the epitome of why I was not supposed to be there. I was working
with Joan Rivers too. Six months later, she quit on me. I was stuck. I
didn't want to be without health insurance. Thank God Bob [Grant] came
along."
Pimp Dennis Hof wears a T-shirt "Hookers are better than wives - they're
more honest."
Jenna Jameson drew the longest lines - signing for Vivid, Digital Sin
and for Hustler with Larry Flynt. The show was at its most packed Saturday
afternoon. The fan line to get in ran through the Venetian, about 1/3
of a mile.
How did Asia Carrera enjoy the show? She was the first person I saw that
I recognized at the AVN Expo and the last person I photographed before
leaving.
Asia replies to my email: "The show seems to be getting a little easier
for me every year. In no way would I call it FUN, but it's not quite as
agonizing as it was in earlier years. I guess it's a combination of kinda
getting used to the mob scene, plus the fans being very understanding
about my social phobia, and figuring out ways to disguise myself enough
that I can get some decent quiet time at the slot machines in between
signings. Who knows, maybe in another ten years I'll actually have adapted
enough to ENJOY the CES show! hahahaha!!"
MikeSouth.com reports: Max Hardcore
was due to stand trial starting tomorrow, but the prosecutor is sick and
has requested to move the trial date. No word on when the new one will
be. His first trial ended in a hung jury.
Fashionistas Cleans Up:
At the AVN Awards last night Fashioinistas won damn near everything it
was nominated for. The rest of the Awards were pretty evenly distributed.
Tera and Evan...Again:
No sign of them on the show floor since the last report, But I have learned
that Tera has bought herself an engagement ring, yes you read that right,
she bought it for herself. I have also learned that she bought Evan a
Hummer. Seems he found himself a sugar mommy.
1/11/03
MikeSouth.com reports: Tera Patrick
and her new beau were spotted on the floor of the show today, It is said
that she was signing at the AIM Booth, but I saw them at the Jill Kelly
Booth and word is she is trying to get them to give her work. I hope Jill
Kelly, front person for Bob Friedlander isn't that stupid. I saw them
leave shortly after they arrived then they returned. A photographer Annali
is telling people that Tera may work for anyone now, that is very simply
not true and would likely get anyone shooting her into a legal battle
that they would just as soon avoid. If Tera was signing at the AIM Booth,
the right thing for AIM to have done would have been to ask the folks
a Digital Playground, lets face it y'all we need to show just a little
solidarity here, Digital Playground created a monster in Tera Patrick
and now that monster is coming back to bite them. The investment that
they have in Tera is huge and Tera owes them, both legally and more importantly,
morally.
Kevin from Stunningcurves.com
reports: John Stagliano, John Leslie and Patrick Collins were seen talking
with each other. The rumors I've been hearing is the three of them are
trying to bury the hatchet. This could be incredible. These three guys
have made some of the best porn ever. Imagine if they began to collaborate
on projects. It would be the re-birth of porn.
One of the more important events of this years show is the unveiling of
Digital Playground's latest starlet Jesse Jane. I had the chance to meet
Jesse a little early and instantly feel in love with her. This girl is
amazing. She has never done adult. Has a totally fresh look and a smile
to die for.
When I asked Joone, one of the owners of Digital, where he found Jesse
his comment was that she was hiding under a rock. I think it is more along
the lines that she fell from heaven.
There is little doubt that Monique Alexander is incredibly gorgeous. However
it appears she is contract free. It seems SinCity has cut Monique loose.
The rumor I hear is that SinCity accused Monique of doing a movie for
a different company while under contact.

Days Two
If fan attendance was a bit anemic on Thursday, the massive lines outside
of the Sands Expo Center on Friday morning could only be seen as a sign
that the 2003 Adult Entertainment Expo was alive and well. Long before
the show floor opened for fan hours, the bodies were lined up far into
the hallway. Porn fans paying thirty five dollars a head to mingle with
their favorite stars stretched as far as the eye could see.
I spent the early part of the day in the Red Light District booth where
I met and interviewed company owner Dion Giarusso. This is RLD’s second
Adult Expo, but their catalog of titles has jumped from 2 to 55 in that
time and the fan reaction was overwhelming. Dion has taken the lessons
he has learned in his years with Elegant Angel and applied them to his
new company. From day one, RLD has used customer feedback and the internet
to fine tune their business plan. Listening to customers and fans on things
like simultaneous DVD/VHS release dates has helped RLD move quickly up
porn’s ladder.
The most interesting moment of the day happened when Digital Playground’s
wayward starlet Tera Patrick made her way around the show floor. Recently
married, Ms. Patrick has gone into semi-retirement. Though still under
contract with DP, Tera has declared herself a free agent. With every stop
at a new booth, Tera’s presence fueled already rampant rumors that she
may be ready to announce plans for a “new” contract with another company.
All that talk turned out to be just that as Tera sashayed her way across
the floor with her boyfriend and a few “companions” before leaving for
the day.
Later that day, Jill Kelly Productions announced their new contract girl.
Since Tera had spent a good deal of time at the JKP booth, there was a
good deal of speculation that she might have joined the company. Instead
it was Jezabelle Bond who was announced as the new JKP Girl. A nice addition
to the team even if she doesn’t make quite as interesting a story as Tera
would have.
After the show, www.adultdvdtalk.com held their first Vegas get together.
Industry representatives from Evil Angel, Anabolic, LVNI, DVSX, VCA, Shane’s
World, Elegant Angel, Diabolic and Pandora Cinema mingled with readers
and contributors to one of the net’s most active forums. The mixing of
industry insiders and fans makes the forum unique and that spirit carried
over to the party.
Day Three
Saturday’s crowd was even heavier than the one that nearly overran the
booths on Friday. Outside the Expo, the line to get in for fan hours was
as long as two and a half hours. When they got inside, they found the
aisles packed and the lines for autographs quite long. Many of the lines
were made longer as the day progresses when some of the stars made early
exits to prepare for the big AVN Awards Show.
One of the women who had good reason to leave early on Saturday was Chloe.
The industry veteran and VCA contract girl was the hostess for the awards
show and was kind enough to give me an interview this year at great risk
to her voice. She had a lot to say about her years in the business, the
direction she wants to take her career and some new toy projects in the
works with Las Vegas Novelties.
The big question of the day was “Where is Extreme Associates?” No one
from the company was expected on the floor as they no longer buy booth
space at the Expo. Last year, they set up their own display in another
hotel, but this year no one from the company was seen in Las Vegas all
week. No one seems to have heard from anyone at the company in some time.
Also still missing in action was Ex-Extreme director Thomas Zupko. Since
leaving (or being fired from) Extreme, Zupko has been very scarce. No
one knows where he might end up. The most common rumor making the rounds
is that Zupko might end up working for Patrick Collins as Elegant Angel.
When asked about the possibility of hiring Zupko, Collins replied, “Hell
no. No chance.” I guess we’ll have to wait to hear from Zupko himself
to find out what comes next for the enigmatic director.
Some people just can’t seem to keep their feet out of the mouths. Wicked
director/performer Brad Armstrong is apparently just such a person. While
enjoying some time away from the floor, Armstrong was approached by an
industry veteran who complimented Brad on his feature “Falling From Grace.”
His response to the award winning and legendary director (Who also just
released a very successful feature) was a curt, “I guess you know now
just how hard it is to make a feature.” Apparently Brad forgot that the
man complimenting him has been making features for longer than he has
been in the business. Hey Brad, next time just ask, I’ll clue you in on
who is who or at least give you some salt to help that shoe leather go
down a little easier.
As an interesting side note, porn journalist and everyone’s favorite whipping
boy L-ke F-ord was seen on the floor Saturday. Since selling his site,
Luke has been writing about mainstream projects and pops up from time
to time with news from the adult world. I imagine he picked up a lot on
the floor this weekend.
I also had the distinct pleasure of meeting Henri Pachard on the floor
today. He is one the people I respect most in this business, both as a
film maker and a writer. Meeting him was an honor and he had some unexpected
and undeserved praise that had me smiling all day.
Day Four
Sundays are always the quietest days for the Adult Expo. Most of the performers
and industry people stay up late at parties following the AVN Awards.
This year the floor seemed particularly dead on Sunday morning. People
came dragging in a bit late as the aisles filled with fans hoping to get
some last day autographs.
The big news from the AVN Awards was how many statues Evil Angel collected.
They came home with an amazing 19, including a record tying 10 for “Fashionistas.”
John Stagliano’s brilliant four hour and forty minute epic made it a huge
year for the Evil Empire. Lexington Steele collected the award as Male
Performer of the Year for the third time in the last four years. Aurora
Snow finally broke out and won as Female Performer of the Year while Jenna
Haze took home the Starlet of the Year honors as the best new girl in
the biz.
As always, the final day brings the show to a close with a whole lot of
missed interviews. For the third year in a row, Haven wasn’t around on
Sunday to give the promised interview. I’ll have to get on her case about
that when we get back to LA and see if we can line up the JKP Girls for
an interview back home. Jules Jordan was unable to hook up with me, but
we’ve already got things set to interview at home. It was another year
when I was unable to get close to any of the Vivid Girls, including Jenna
Jameson. Instead of harping too much on the missed interviews, I’ll just
let you all know that I got more this year than ever. Look for interviews
with Anabolic owner Chris Alexander, Digital Playground’s Devon and Jesse
Jane, Chloe, Jewel De’Nyle, Jim Gunn, Avy Scott, Aurora Snow, Gauge, Calli
Cox and two dozen others coming soon.
