Sophie Roche Dead

Walter Burns writes on RAME: I'm afraid Sophie Roche indeed has passed away. The French magazine Hot Video had a very small article in their february issue on the death of Sophie Roche. It seems that she passed away early in January 2002. While the article didn't mention that she had committed suicide, it did state that she passed away following a family tragedy, in French "un drame familial".

Some Nudity Required

I interviewed producer Anthony Unger at his home in Los Angeles August 28, 2002.

Tony: "I was approached by a woman [Odette Springer] who wanted to do a documentary about what it's like for women breaking into low-budget films and where it leads. She'd worked for Roger Corman."

DUC: "That sounds a lot like that documentary Some Nudity Required."

Tony: "That was Some Nudity Required. Let me tell you what happened. Halfway through the film, there was a disagreement over the direction the film was taking, as opposed to the original presentation. I had sold the foreign rights to the film. The foreign distributor was alarmed as well about the new direction. It was finally decided that we would split the rights. She would keep America and cut it the way she wanted. And we would cut our version and that would be the foreign version (The Dark Side of Hollywood).

"As far as I know, her version, Some Nudity Required, was never released in America. It was shown at Sundance and got a lot of publicity... She was good at self promotion. She turned it into a woman's issue film. The film was financed personally by me and the foreign distributor.

"We were going to focus on the careers of two actresses working in Roger Corman type films - Julie Strain and Maria Ford. Julie Strain thought it [exploitation films] were the greatest thing to ever happen to her. She was a Penthouse Pet. She was totally inhibited. She married the guy who created Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. She has a nice house in Coldwater Canyon. The other actress, Maria Ford, was going insane. She felt like she was going insane. She would never be taken seriously. She felt like her career was destroyed.

"So one thought it was great and one thought it was terrible. It made for an interesting story. We had access to the Corman library and other interviews and footage that I'd arranged for her to get. It showed that men can survive starting in B pictures as actors and directors, Jack Nicholson worked for Roger Corman for five years doing 18 pictures (also Sylvester Stallone, Ron Howard). While for women, it was a dead-end. No actress who worked in a Corman picture was ever heard of.

"I arranged for her to film an interview with Sam Arkoff and get clips from his early films. In the course of the documentary, Springer decided that the making of the film had triggered memories of the sexual abuse she'd suffered at the hands of her uncle. She shot footage of herself and her own story and tried to bookend it. I felt that this was not of great commercial interest. We reach loggerheads on it and we decided to go our separate ways. We made our money back. The distributor wished he'd never met us and got involved with the project.

"She was on her way to making a brilliant film. She had this wonderful way with the actresses. She was a good interviewer. Then when she decided the movie was about her, and that her uncle raped her... She went to all these feminists groups and showed it to anybody who'd sit still long enough to watch it."

From the Associated Press: After terrific film-fest and media buzz over her documentary on Hollywood's B-movie industry, Odette Springer still had to be her own best cheerleader when the film hit the theater. "Some Nudity Required" opened for a one-week run last fall at a single theater in Santa Monica, Calif., with Springer standing in the street and handing out fliers to encourage passers-by to come see her movie.

A classically trained musician, Springer wound up as music supervisor for dozens of sex-soaked, blood-spattered movies by B-movie czar Roger Corman. Springer turned her insider's knowledge to good use, creating an insightful, personal and humorous look at this underbelly of Hollywood's output.

"We're all voyeurs. We want to see inside other people's lives, and because it's real life, it's actually more exciting. A real-life 'Boogie Nights' is far more exciting because it is real. You just can't make up people like that," Springer said.

Despite the provocative material, good press and warm receptions at Sundance and other film festivals, "Some Nudity Required" landed only a small distribution deal. After its week in Santa Monica, it played one more week in downtown Los Angeles. "Some Nudity Required" had a fair run at the Laemmle theater in Santa Monica, but documentaries rarely draw big crowds, said assistant manager Aron Knight.

After the documentary came out, Roger Corman filed a lawsuit: Director/producer Roger Corman – The King of the B-movies -- has filed an $8 million suit against the producers of a documentary called "Some Nudity Required" for allegedly defaming him and using clips and music without permission. The complaint, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims that Odette Springer, the producer and director of the documentary, "deceived and tricked Corman into granting an interview" by telling him she was making a feature on "women in film."

Instead, the suit claimed, Springer's was out "to make a documentary for exploitation purposes intended to appeal to the prurient interest of certain viewers." Corman’s more than 270 credits as a producer and/or director include "Night Call Nurses," "The Wasp Woman," "Queen of Blood," "Alien Avengers," "Club Vampire," "Teenage Doll," "Naked Paradise," "Attack of the Crab Monsters," and "Saga of the Viking Women and Their Voyage to the Waters of the Great Sea Serpent."

Filmthreat.com comments on Some Nudity Required: "This confused personal documentary by Odette Springer, a former Roger Corman employee, explores the world of scream queens and the actresses who would bare more than their soul to be maimed in schlock Corman flicks. The film follows the scream queens on their quest for respect as well as revealing Odette Springer's personal journey while working for Corman as a music composer for these B-movies. Springer learns that she was molested as a child. Sequences of the film are intercut with 8mm films of Springer as a three year-old doing her own brand of nude dancing. The frequent use of herself as an innocent naked child borders on exploitation itself. Neither story is successfully told -- the scream queens' or Springer's alleged molestation leaving a less than satisfying experience for viewers. (And that's really hard to do in a film that features so many bare breasts!)."

Jonathan Delacour writes on his weblog: Odette Springer's documentary about the B movie industry is, for the most part, little more than a series of talking heads intercut with scenes of sex and violence from the schlock movies they've made. Producer or director, male or female, bartender wannabee-actors or Penthouse pets, they offer an ingenious array of justifications for participating in the creation of meretricious junk. With a few exceptions, they delude themselves that the B industry is a necessary (though admittedly evil) step on their journey to mainstream Hollywood.

Only the relaxed and urbane Roger Corman (Attack of the Giant Leeches, Swamp Women, Little Shop of Horrors) seems completely comfortable about his "minor part in the history of the film industry" (his words). Jim Wynorski (Chopping Mall, Sorority House Massacre 2, The Bare Wench Project) candidly admits that he got into the industry to make money and get laid, points out that large breasts are the B movie's most important special effect, then goes ballistic at the "boring questions" Springer is asking him.

But it's Maria Ford (Strip for Action, Strip to Kill 2, Stripteaser) who makes Some Nudity Required worth watching. In a series of heartbreaking interviews she articulates her desperate desire to be an actress within a production system that only allows her to "act" in exchange for appearing nude. At one point she says: "I asked them if I could do the part without doing the nudity and they looked at me as though I was crazy." She talks about the pressure to have breast implants and how she would look at herself in the mirror, wondering what was wrong with her breasts -- too small, not high enough on her chest?

Finally, there's a masterful cut from Dan Golden's throwaway remark about the disposable nature of the character Ford plays in his movie Naked Obsession to Ford herself, telling of her fears of getting a reputation for being "difficult" then bewailing the Faustian pact she has made:

"What the f--- am I supposed to do? What am I supposed to do? I don't want to be difficult. And I don't want a rumor going around town saying I'm difficult so I go in and I do the nudity and I do exactly what I'm told. And I look at the movie and I want to throw up when it's done because all that's left in there is my f---ing nudity and my acting's not even there. And they're the same people that are going to walk around and say she's nothing but a sleazy bimbo, you know, who's good for nothing but her body and she's not an actress. What am I supposed to do? What is the answer for me?"

Unfortunately, Springer couldn't come up with an answer. According to her unofficial fan site, Maria Ford went ahead with breast implants as well as collagen injections for her lips.

Bazdol writes on Imdb.com about the 1998 documentary Some Nudity Required: The Dark Side of Hollywood: Ms. Springer obviously has a bone to pick with the industry and she has her right to do so, of course. However, not all B erotic movies are filled with sex coupled with violence to the extreme, as she seems to suggest. Some are well done with fairly high production values for the genre, excellent acting, and even decent plots; for example, "Secrets of a Chambermaid," "Testing the limits," "Lolita 2000," "Virtual Encounters," and many more. I believe some actresses, such as Nikki Fritz, take their roles with a professional attitude and are to be admired; there are others, such as Kira Reed, Amber Newman, Brandy Davis, Jacqueline Lovell, Samantha Phillips, and Regina Russell, who also do quite well and need not be ashamed of their work. These women, after all, have not gone into hardcore, although I'm sure many of them could have. I notice that Stephanee LaFleur. one of the better actresses in this category who either voluntarily or under pressure has her breasts grossly augmented through surgery, provides a negative comment below though.

Ufotds writes: The interesting and highly entertaining part of this doc is to hear about everybody in the business say that this is only on the way up to the A-movies. At the same time all the actresses are extremely unhappy, feel abused and discriminated, feel that they are treated in the most sexist way possible(yes, they DO realise that, you know). In the doc, the directors also openly admit that they choose the actresses on their tit-size and nothing else ("and of course, we assume that you are prepared to do the nudity, don't you love?"). Therefore half of hollywood is filled with actresses who had boob-jobs done, only because they saw that as their only option to ever make it in hollywood, and now regret it. What a wonderfull world! It is no secret that there are quite some men out there trying to get horny on big boobs, but that the industries apply the theory of low level sexism to the letter, was a suprise for me. Check out this one quote, from I think a producer: "On one hand, you have snuff-movies, which are extremely violent. On the other hand you've got X-rated movies, which are completely sexual. The best way to make that acceptable and combine that for the broad public is an "Erotic thriller," cause that's what every hollywood B-movie is called.

Libra writes: When i saw this documentary some time ago, i found it really irritating. It is in many parts Odette Springer's annoying tribute to Odette Springer with it's to many "i'm-a-extremely-fantastic-and-talented-person-but-nobody-understands-it" scenes. What makes it more annoying is that Springer looks down on the people she wants to depict (Except Maria Ford who is "a-extremely-fantastic-and-talented-person-but-nobody-understands-it".) and sometimes steps on them. It is also filled with faked documentary scenes like the ridiculous scene where Springer looks at a violent video and gets "excited" what leads us to the scene that gave me a bade taste in my mouth- in the end of the movie tries Odette Springer to find a reason to why she got "excited" when she saw the violent video and from the clear blue sky the truth falls over her (and the poor audience)- all of a sudden she remembers that she was subjected to sexual abuse by her grand parents. What makes me feel bad about that scene is that she don't presents any real evidence and that the grand parents both are dead so they don't have any chance to defend themselves from the accusation.

A-chriw writes: Director's look at the B-Movie industry is thought-provoking, at its best, but spends a good deal more time with her own interpretations of her experience than really trying to show us what the industry is like. Odette Springer is in many ways embarrassed about her involvement in the industry, and attempts to explain both her attraction to such work and the involvement of people in the industry in terms of personal weakness. A great deal of time is spent making the argument that women are 1) discriminated against based on looks 2) intentionally kept out of good roles and 3) only like the industry if they are mentally disturbed. This documentary (which watches like a TV movie for Lifetime TV) really, really begs some questions, such as: Did any of the "exploited" women portrayed take any acting classes? Did any of these women explore other, more "tasteful" options like dinner theater? The underlying, unquestioned premise here is that "Any woman should be able to get tasteful roles which do not require nudity in 'A' grade films." Had the director worked on questioning this a bit (by interviewing women with acting ability or in live theater), this would be a 7. Without ever explaining or questioning that, it is a 5.

Big Guy writes: Being a fan of typical "bad" movies I was very interested to see this documentary. I have seen numerous of the movies that were featured (I have to admit) but never really thought about the people making the movies. One thing that amazed me was how good the at acting the actors became outside of the movies. Julie Strain displayed more emotion and feelings in the few minutes she was featured than in all of her other movies combined. Of course in those few minutes she showed what a shallow person she is. As most of the directors and producers seem to be. They all seemed very paranoid about their movies being called exploitative. Overall the movie was quite good. I could have done without the home video of the little girl naked (flashback to molestation of Odette as a child). Also it seemed that the footage of Maria Ford (one of the main interviewees) was overdone. I am a fan of hers but it seems that she was exploited for this film to make it more gritty. Many of the others interviewed didn't see a problem (being more concerned about making money).

Oliver's brother Steve appears in a 1/7/02 article in Fortune about the decline of the Disney company. "Disney has not done enough to retain its key executives," says Steve Unger, director of the media and entertainment practice at the Heidrick & Struggles search firm. "There was a certain arrogance and hubris attendant to the success. Now it's compounded by a certain defensiveness."

Magpie writes on RAME: I've just watched "I Like to Play Games Too" starring Maria Ford, and although it's only softcore I was surprised to find that Maria Ford's performance was more erotic that just about any hardcore stuff I've seen in a long time! The last time I saw her was in the doco "Some Nudity Required" where she was insecure about her looks, feeling that she had to make movies with nudity in order to be an actress, and awaiting her big break into the mainstream. She was very upset about how audiences might misunderstand her due to the roles she plays, and scared that this was taking her further away from her dream of being a hollywood actress. However, she's now had implants (and they look good!) and making movies that are just short of being hardcore. I was surprised to discover that she has almost no prescence on the internet; I've done several searches, using different engines and have found no fan sites, galleries etc. Nearly all the other actresses who appear in these films have got their own sites, merchandising, pictorials for Penthouse and or Playboy, but not Maria Ford? Am I the only person who finds her attractive? Is the fact that unlike the other performers in these films she can actually act unappealing to people?

Pat Riley On DVDs

Pat Riley writes on RAME: I would love to be able to see (say) David Christopher fondling Taylor St. Clair and just hit "Next Scene" but unfortunately experience has taught me that doing so sometimes misses out on important matters and even occasionally a good scene. What happens if some unknown cutie pie joins Taylor and Christopher? What about if Taylor bites off his dick? I can't say that I listen to all the dialog but wouldn't it be interesting if she said, "You're just an ugly dirty old man who should wake up to himself and retire"? Or, "I'm still taking antibiotics for my last STD. Are you sure you want to do this without a condom?" In FF on tape I can see the reaction to dialog.

But most of the time it's not that the performers are grossly ugly and/or known for their going-through-the-motions. Usually they're just mediocre (that's "ordinary" on the attractive scale--say Eric Everhard and Hannah Harper) and they haven't established such a track record that you condemn them out of hand. What happens if suddenly in the course of FF'ing you see Eric pull out prematurely and deposit a load on her belly and then they continue in a normal missionary (NOT "L" shaped) with some kissing and fondling and she clasps her legs around his butt... or that the action stops and they're lying on their sides talking to each other and he's stroking her hair and kissing her... or any number of visual clues that this scene might have a little passion? The answer of course is that I slow down, back up, listen to what they're saying, etc.

And it does happen even with the ugly. You can't get much uglier than Vanessa del Rio but in "Tigresses and other Maneaters" she's doing a four way and all of a sudden the mood changes. It's not that it becomes romantic as in the example of Eric and Hannah but there's definitely a swing to passion. I have no idea what she was on that day but whatever it was that's the sort of snake oil they should be selling to women the world over. She was obviously highly aroused and as a result the scene was very erotic. Under your chapter skip, I would have missed it. And BTW this applies with or without reviews. If it's not a screener I chose the movie for some reason. Why not watch all of it albeit in FF to get my money's worth?

According to one of the "experts" on the DVD group there is no specific hack to get around the copyright crap which is borne out by the websites that specialize in region hacks and macrovision elimination. "Do not adjust your TV. We are controlling transmission...." Right out of the Twilight Zone. Actually I don't want to FF it. I must be one of the half dozen people in the country who tries to PAUSE it to read the dates of production and if new, copy down the address of the custodian of records.

Hell to Pay

In a letter to Berth Milton, the owner and CEO of Private, last summer, Hells Angels Sweden is claiming their stake in the company based on a long-standing feud between Berth Milton and his now deceased father, who says he was cheated out of the publishing right to the Private magazines "Private" and "Pirate".

According to Tomas Dahlén of Private Press Sweden, the Hells Angels Sweden owned company who sent the letter to Berth Milton last year, the 71 year-old father left the claim to the publishing rights of Private Media Group, Inc. to the Hells Angels in his will just before his death.

Representatives for Private Media Group, Inc. says the claim is without merit, while the Hells Angels, who are represented by attorney Thomas Martinson, says they will continue their battle for what they insist rightfully belongs to them.

Burning Man is suing Voyeur over two videotapes shot at the event by Voyeur's owner and sole employee, James O'Brien. The tapes, which show nude women engaged in a variety of activities, from the mundane to the sexual, have been up for sale on Voyeur Video's Web site since 1999. O'Brien responded to cease-and-desist letters from Burning Man by changing the name of the tapes from Burning Man to Rainbow Fire Festival. But Voyeur Video is still selling the tapes.

'Net Billers Stung In Child Porn Crackdown

From Msnbc.com: 4:20 p.m. EDT August 27, 2002 - The state is demanding that six Web site billing companies stop processing payments from computer users interested in getting child pornography online.

Attorney General Jennifer Granholm announced Tuesday that her office has issued cease and desist orders to BillCards, CardBilling, Ccbill, LancelotSecurity, iBill and Trust-Bill. Each of the companies were notified that providing access to and collecting proceeds from members on behalf of child pornography Web sites constituted aiding and abetting child porn distribution, which is illegal in Michigan.

"These companies are acting as the keepers of the keys to child porn Web sites across the globe," Granholm said, in a statement released Tuesday. "They're now on notice that if they choose not to take responsibility for their actions, we'll take them to criminal court."

Many illegal child porn Web sites are based in other countries but work with billing companies that have relationships with banks and credit card companies in the United States, according to investigators. The billing companies act as the middleman between the Web site operators and the banks, allowing customers who want access to child porn to pay monthly access fees by credit card.

Asked what iBill's accounting of the situation was, Bongiorno said he was told that iBill was under investigation for promoting the sale of child pornography [Granholm said she believes this is the first time law enforcement has gone after these types of Internet billers]. "They said because of that they turned off our billing," Bongiorno added. "They literally make billions off the adult industry every year and after all the money we make for them they turn us off without any evidence. Just because the attorney general threatened their merchant accounts."

Raven Returns

I found this on a discussion board: CHATSWORTH, Calif. — There have been several actresses who referred to themselves as "Raven" in the XXX business... but only one of them lasted more than a couple of years, beginning in 1984, with the last of her approximately 170 roles occurring in 1993.

"I moved to Florida in order to get away from him, where I started back in nursing school, went back to work; was raising my son on my own, and to wrap it up in a nutshell, on September 16, 2001, my ex-husband broke into my condo and tried to kill me. Apparently, he was upset about me divorcing him. He had agreed to it, but at 2 o'clock in the morning, he broke into my condo, tried to kill me. I was left in my condo for six days with my son, going in and out of consciousness. It was pretty horrific. I didn't remember what happened for like three months. My dad brought me back here to California to seek medical treatment. We knew I'd been attacked; we just didn't know by whom, but in January, I got a new neurologist, who put me on a drug which helped me to remember the events that happened.

"I had to go back to Florida in order to open the attempted murder against my ex-husband. Because there are three states involved, it's an ongoing federal investigation. But I'm back with my old boyfriend, who I won't name, but whom I've known from this industry for 13 years, and I'm looking at directing and writing scripts. I won't go back in front of the camera, because as my old friend Ginger Lynn said, 'It's time to hang up my g-string.' It's really, really nice to come back, because I grew up in this business. I came in at 18 years old, and my old friends are still my old friends."

Ah, funny you should mention that. Citizen Kane IIRC is a thinly veiled insight into the life of William Randolph Hearst, arguably the most powerful man in the US in the early part of the twentieth century ("You take the photos: I'll furnish the war." or something like that). There's a current movie, The Cat's Meow" dealing with one incident in his life which occurred aboard his private yacht during a party attended by a set of Hollywood celebrities. The movie stars Kirsten Dunst as his mistress, Marion Davies. He's about in his sixties and seeing the two of them together (no nudity or even sex) is like watching Randy West prong an 18-year old--quite disgusting.

Also there is Charlie Chaplin who was noted in real life as having an insatiable appetite for women and as this movie states he was having problems with his latest, Lita, who unfortunately was pregnant and sixteen. Charlie was also making an effort to get into Marion's pants but she, although drawn to him, was resisting her own impulses.

One night after dinner, Marion, Charlie, a couple of (today they'd probably be porn performers) near-whores, a black jazz musician and drug supplier, and Eleanor Glynn, an acerbic columnist for one of Hearst's papers all end up in a stateroom doing drugs and playing charades. It's Charlie and Marion's turn and they go through a pantomime as though they were looking in the mirror. It's been done many times, notably by the Marx brothers, and involves the two pacing each other and when one performs some action the other does a mirror image. Even though the two are as disparate as Marion and Charlie the idea is to catch the other out and say "That's not me". This goes on for a little while but it's obvious that Charlie's moves are those of the seducer and Marion is the sweet young thing falling into his trap. The tension is electric, the room is silent, and all are mesmerized by the action. They're about to go into a clinch when Eleanor, horrified at what is happening, breaks the spell and takes Marion outside "to explain the clue."

Understand that there's no nudity, no body fondling, no overt actions,... but it pulls you in and makes you identify particularly with Marion and her impending abandonment of control to Charlie. A very powerful and well done scene and the sort of thing that porn should be doing. Ahhh, who am I kidding? Porn has no one to match the acting ability of Kirsten and even if it did, the morons we euphemistically call directors wouldn't know a good scene if they fell over it. Back to your raincoater-preferred double anals...

Now I ask you, what is more important to a porn viewer than good FF? I've tried multiple disks from different companies and seen the problem on multiple DVD players and I even found a salesman at an electronics store (PC Richards, if you're interested) who was willing to demonstrate four separate DVD's and it showed up on all of them. When it was pointed out, he asserted that he had never seen a DVD player that didn't have the jerky every 16th or every 32nd still frame instead of FF.

Ah, yes, Roger and Torris, and all those other proponents of "DVD's are wonderful; you're just a luddite to be still using a VCR". Guys, let's come out of the shadows and address this issue, not whether DVD's can hold more, or whether they take up less space, or whether you can archive your entire collection on a juke box and call up a scene which you'll find was just as bad as when you first watched it. Just FF/REW visual search function. Oh, yeah and maybe the "Naughty boy don't you dare try to do something we don't approve of" hand that appears during the boring parts, and maybe also the speed of response to FF and PLAY etc. The ones I've seen have all the speed of an 8088 chip.

Oh, and I'm not too thrilled about the "great picture" either. Porn doesn't in fact lend itself to too close an examination. Otherwise you note the acne pits, the zits, and the flecks of s--- around the girls' assholes. But then if you're an ardent raincoater, I suppose that's exactly what you want to see.

Today is Wednesday August 14th. I am sitting at my computer working on background info on Devon, while she is in Hollywood, California hosting the "Miss Exotic Dancer California" contest at Déjà vu. D: I was born in Daytona Beach, FL on March 28th.

D: I started in adult films almost 2 years ago. I've been under an exclusive contract with Vivid Video ever since. I got my start though, as a stripper in a small town in Pennsylvania where I grew up. I worked at a club in Reading, PA called Al's Diamond Cabaret. Every year, adult companies make a number of moves to try and improve their product. This may come in the form of picking up some new contract stars, hiring a new director or making other additions to the company. However, no studio in recent memory has made a better decision than the one-two punch Digital Playground performed when they signed both Devon and acclaimed director Nic Andrews to exclusive contracts. Those brilliant business decisions pay off in spades in Devon Stripped, easily the best feature film to be produced by Digital Playground, and one that is bound to have Devon mentioned in the same breath as Jenna Jameson and Tera Patrick when it comes to the elite adult actresses working in the industry today.

We've all seen Devon perform before - her compilation DVDs are among the best selling in the industry. But thanks to Nic Andrews great direction, he also shows us a Devon that can act, as well as knock us out with her sexual energy - and whether it's the ability of Andrews to pull performances out of his talent, or Devon showing off some thespian skills that she never got a chance to show before on film, this is one performance that should be remembered come award time next year.

But to call this movie a simple "porno" would be an insult to those who put it together. Yes, there's plenty of sex in Devon Stripped, but its action that is a logical result of the storyline - not something thrown in so fans can get their "jollys".

Devon Stripped reminds one of those old classics (with a 21st century look, of course) where plot still mattered and the ultimate goal was to make something both erotic and meaningful. Devon stars as Annette, a young aspiring actress who is going on a lot of casting calls, winds up showing a lot of skin, but is still not getting any work. She's best friends with Wanda (Ginger Lynn), whom she is surprised to find out makes her extra money by stripping. Devon is repulsed by the idea at first, but after Ginger double-dares her to check out the club where she works, Devon sneaks away to the strip bar.

Needing the extra money and not finding any real acting jobs, Devon decides to join Ginger at the club, and within a month is feature dancing herself. But the story (written by both Andrews and Beth Ann Rafael) doesn't sugarcoat the world of stripping, nor does it paint it out to be degrading either. It walks a fine line between being both appealing and unappetizing, and the honesty of the storyline is what makes Devon Stripped so interesting to watch.

This strip club has a somewhat seedy owner (played by Herschel Savage), who takes advantage of the girls who work for him (don't miss the fantastic scene where Herschel "takes advantage" of Monica Sweetheart!). Savage does a fine job in his role, never going over the top or becoming too "evil", but being just sleazy enough for the viewer to dislike him…but not despise him.

As for the sexual action, there's an opening scene with Devon and Barrett B. (who plays her boyfriend) that is slow and erotic, yet still very hardcore. Also, in addition to the Savage/Sweetheart scene at the strip club, there's a lesbian scene in the club's bathroom between Monica Mayhem and (I believe) Nakita Kash; an additional lesbian scene with Devon and Holly Hollywood on the bar of the club; and a final coupling that finds Devon making out with Julian. In addition to the hardcore sex, there are also a number of dance routines and lap dances (mainly featuring Ginger Lynn and Devon, although not together) that may be the next best thing to seeing either of these performers live at a local club.

Devon Stripped begins with the words "Based On A True Story", but the fact of the matter is that Andrews' film is based on many true stories, as it tells the tale of a woman who is an aspiring actress and finds herself lured into the world of stripping and sex. But there's no preaching by the director here - leaving it up to the viewer as to whether the path that Devon's character has taken is good, bad or simply the way life is.

The video and audio quality of Devon Stripped is top-notch, and comparable with most mainstream releases on DVD. The DVD is loaded with wonderful bonus features, including a great audio commentary with Nic Andrews, Devon, Ginger Lynn, Barrett B. and writer Beth Ann Rafael. There's also an entertaining behind the scenes look at the making of the film; and one of the more interesting bonuses I have ever seen on an adult DVD - actual footage of the casting call for the movie, where we get to see Monica Sweetheart try out for the lead role, in addition to Devon and Barrett reading for the parts that they would eventually get.

In addition to these great supplements, viewers will also be treated to a bloopers reel, the complete audio segments from the radio program and strip club DJ that are heard in the background in several scenes of Devon Stripped, the trailer for the movie, a photo gallery and slide show and biographies for Devon, Ginger Lynn and Nic Andrews. In short, this is one loaded DVD with some great looking and well-designed menus that should have fans entertained for hours after they have viewed the feature presentation. Well written, visually stunning and with a performance that should propel Devon into superstardom in the adult business (if indeed, she not there already), Devon Stripped is the kind of adult feature I hope for every time I slide a DVD into my player.You may watch it the first time for the sex, but you'll watch it again and again afterwards because it's a great film. Like the dethroned Harvard Business Review editor, 62 percent of Americanshave had an office romance, a new survey says. Even more surprising, 41 percent had sex on the job - with half of themdoing it on a desk and 16 percent in the boss' office.

The survey, conducted by Elle magazine and MSNBC, analyzed the replies of31,000 people who answered an Internet questionnaire.

It found that of the 62 percent who had an office romance, 42 percent weremarried or in a relationship. Half the women and 20 percent of the men had a romance with a superior.

The Return Of Silvia Saint

Vic writes: Sometime ago, you will recall it was announced that the gorgeous Silvia Saint was retiring to marry a Czech countryman and that she was also expecting her first baby. When I saw the posting several months afterwards, I e-mailed "Private" in Spain to express my appreciation, mentioning favourite movies "Call Girl" and other ones including by VMD, etc.I got no reply from Private. However, when I e-mailed Silvia c/o her management address (after spotting Dream Entertainment mentioned on the Web in the Czech Republic), I did get a very nice reply ending with a "kiss" and a PS. "It's really me - aren't you a lucky man??? I don't know if it was really Silvia, - friends say it was the cleaner! - but maybe it really was her?

Silvia said she wouldn't be doing any more movies but that she was still thinking about getting back into glamour photography and added that we might see more photos of her perhaps and to never say never! - adding that she was sorry to disappoint us and that she was proud that fans all over the world "really appreciated her work". Does anyone know, did Silvia get married? did she have her baby? I hope that she is O.K. Of course, since Silvia's departure, we've had the lovely double DVD box from "Private" and I notice that Silvia still adorns the "private.com" web site on opening it up. Like the fiery-eyed beauty "Angelica Bella" before her, I do think she was a unique moviestar always giving good value to the fans and giving a polished performance. NB. On one of the recent "MMV" films (with a foreign title), Silvia is really screaming in an outdoor scene when in the throes! Some of you will know the movie no doubt.
